Back in May Microsoft released a new version of Edit:

"This editor pays homage to the classic MS-DOS Editor, but with a modern interface and input controls similar to VS Code. The goal is to provide an accessible editor that even users largely unfamiliar with terminals can easily use."

There are binaries available for Intel & ARM Windows (64 bit) as well as Intel/Arm Linux (64 bit). You can also compile from source (written in rust).

It comes included with Windows 11 25H2 and can be downloaded from the official github link for other versions of Windows:

    https://github.com/microsoft/edit

Check out the ThioJoe video for a quick tutorial:

I especially like the familiar menu at the top with File Edit View Help along with the familiar key mapping (ALT-F for the file menu, CTRL-F for find, etc). The native mouse support is also a nice touch.

If you're running it on Linux also run:
    sudo apt-get install libicu-dev

For find & replace to function.

That looks pretty cool. I didn't actually use Microsoft Edit a whole lot back in the day (I tended to use the SemWare Q editor for DOS), but I occasionally used Edit, and I liked it.

The source code is available. Maybe a 32-bit binary could be built. It looks like the source code is Rust.

    Hi, Warpslide.

Back in May Microsoft released a new version of Edit

Heh, I only recently got reminded of EDIT when I started messing around with DOSBox-x and FreeDOS. I couldn't work out if it was the same EDIT I'd used waaaay back or a new version. I guess this adds another parameter to the equation!

    Still none the wiser...

I just installed this yesterday on my macOS machine - its the editor I used in my MS-DOS days and the newly released version is almost exact. :P Love it.

It's nice having a functional editor that works in a console instead of
calling a GUI editor like Notepad. Of course, I could load up Vim or
EMACS, but that's a conversation for another time...

Treat yourself right and find a copy of TSE or Qedit from back in the
    day. :)

There's another editor called VDE that's pretty nice, defaults to the
Wordstar key bindings and feels like a featureful Wordstar clone.

If you are any part of WWIV's github, please open a ticket for them to fix the quoting. It is horrible ad cuts a word to a new line on EACH line.

I assume the color codes are your BBS preference? That also makes it blend into normal text which makes it harder to read than a normal mesagage.
