Hello,

Yesterday I have finally finished watching the entire Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series from Netflix.

It took me 4 months (from January to here) to watch it completely, a few episodes every night when possible.

In the past, I had seen only up to the first episode of Season 4 (Day of the Warrior) as the series stopped broadcasting here in Brazil after that.

It is, really, very good. The tone is darker than the other series, and it had fantastic episodes, very well-written and that were really what Trek is all about. The ending episode is not really what I was expecting (can't beat "All Good Things" or "Endgame") but it was better than the ending of Enterprise. ;)

Now I'll dive into "Voyager". Long Life to Netflix!

I think for me the core problem was the writers couldn't seem to decide
if Janeway was to be a paragon of Federation virtue, or a badass like
Kirk and Sisko. But even more than that, they seemed to randomly flip.
She'd pick fights for no good reason... but then avoid fights she could
win when there was a good reason.

Like the Phage aliens (the ones who had a plague (called the Phage) who abducted other species and basically stole their organs to replace
whatever organ they had that was failing at the time).

The first time, they steal a Neelix's lungs... ok... but they get them
back and she warns them that they'll face the most dire of consequences.

So they meet again. This time they split Tores into her human and
klingon halves... murder a few crewmen... cause some serious mayhem.
Janeway gets what's left of her people back... and instead of destroying
the complex (which she could easily do) they kinda just sneak off into
the night.

Dire consequences?

the JJ Abrams reboots. My wife really liked JJ's versions better

They're just too silly. Scotty swirling around in the big water tubes just the tip of it for me. Everything seemed to be way over the top exagerated to the point of being silly.

I agree. Didn't they "jump" from one ship to another (or possibly to a
planets surface) in one of the recent ones? No equipment or special
tractor beams or anything to explain it, they just jumped.

I think a good story sets up the enviroment for the plot, than stays true
to the environment. Otherwise the suspension of disbelief just doesn't
work for me.

I was a TOS person - watched reruns as a kid after school.

Have a buddy that was BIG into TNG, but it was long after
the run before I started watching. I enjoyed it too!

Main thing I remember about it was the Vulcan was played by the
'tech guy' on Highwayman. :-D

I think that's just the modern way of telling sci-fi stories at the movies.

I've enjoyed the Transformers movies (just saw 5 - not as impressed with it) and they use that "style" I think.

I never really saw the Transformers movies. I went to see one in the
theater and it was so crowded I walked out (I'm not a big fan of being
crowded in by people). My friends who were with me enjoyed it.... alas.

But as to this being the "modern sci fi" I guess that's my problem with
it. I liked it when things made sense and were utilitarian for the most
part. That's why I loved Star Trek and some of the others. When they do things just for flash and shock... It just makes me wonder why.

Kind of like Star Trek The Motion Sickness. The sole purpose behind that was just to show off their new FX capabilities.

Well, for most of the movie, she pretty much stays Wonder Woman. When she is not, I cannot remember for sure. She did not twirl, though. :)

Yes. The first three seasons were kind of weird, but when the Klingons arrive to fight the Dominion the series turns almost 360 degrees.

I like how they went into the family backgrounds of the characters
more than any other series (at least it seemed that way to me).
The characters seemed more human since you got to see the "non-hero"
side of them.

The episode focused on Dax falling in love with a former lover (where there's the first lesbian kiss into American TV history) and the other where Jake Sisko travels through time to save his father were awesome, I cried man. :)

And Sisko was not to be messed with. After all, he was Shaft in a

I've seen bits and pieces of both series', but have never watched them all. At the time they were on, I just didn't get into them. I may
have go back and check 'em out.

I took that as an exercise to warm up for Star Trek: Discovery. Has been very enjoyable so far.

Around here they were showing Wrath of Khan at some local cinemas for the
35th anniversary. It was amazing seeing it on the huge screen again in a comfortable chair and a bag of popcorn....

It also reminded me why I hate the JJVerse.
