• Help Needed Setting TER500 Up On New Computer

From Al Kaiser@1:142/926 to All on Thu Mar 17 23:10:04 2016
    Hello World!

It's been a very long time since I have seen a message here, I hope there is still activitiy.

I need some advise resetting up TER500 on a new computer.

I reciently built a new dual boot comptuer Windows7 / WIN XP Pro I need XP to be able to run TERMAIL and also one other program that will not run under anyting other than DOS. Windows 7 does not have a DOS enviorment and does
    not support these program.

I had no trouble move TER500 over the the computer, (have not tried BINKD
yet), TER500 runs but when I start it I get the message "ERROR Finding archive program PKZIP. I press enter and it says "WARNING no mail can be packe for user 1, press any key. Next I get the blue screen which starts the mail tossing but give me the option to delete the packet because the mail was not extracted.

Answering no I go to the read screen where I can read the messages in the areas.

Now this XP setup is the same as the other just on a new computer.

The PKZIP and PKUNZIP files are located in the ARC directory like on the other computer.

How do I tell TER500 where to find the packer and I guess the unpaker?

Please help so I can get to using the new computer!

    Thanks

    Al

Since this is a DOS program, you may want to try putting PKZIP and PKUNZIP in your TER500 directory. If that doesn't work, you may have to add your ARC directory to your system path.

I fixed it! I am now running TER500 from my new 6 core Windows7/WindowsXP
    dual boot comptuer.

Fourtunally I have a pretty good working knowledge of DOS and Windows and
I had to give it some thought while working on the Windows 7 side of computer setting up my Ham Radio programs. This computer is a "radio" computer for use in contesting and my ham radio operations.

I kept seeing that PKZIP was not in the path so going to a DOS window and typing the command PATH I see that it was not seeing the ARC directory. A work around was to place PKZIP in IN directory of TER500 it would still see the error but unpack the packets.

The fix was to modify the Windows PATH statement so on startup the XP system sees the ARC directory for a DOS file. I do not remember having to do this with my current machine. I'm wondering why there was a problem with this computer, possibly because is is a very advanced machine.

I'm sort of proud of myself for figuring this out! I don't know if any of the "young generation" computer "geniuses" would be able to figure this out?

I still have one ham radio program that will not run on this computer.
It blanks out the display and I have to reboot to get out of it. My
STSPLUS satellite program does not work.

Put PKUNZIP etc. in your PATH, or try copying it into the TER500 directory.

Please help so I can get to using the new computer!

Not really, but I've always enjoyed it and didn't want to give up on it even though many of the old guard is gone along with their echos.

Far from it thankfully. I've just been around computers since the days of
the TI-99 and my first computer was a TRS Model 4. I have one program that
I use now excluslivy for ham radio that started out as a Model 4 database program and STILL is in producton and a program that runs under Windows 7.

I still have one ham radio program that will not run on this

I think that is the one program that is lost. I can find a Windows substitues if I need to. Worse comes to worse I could always put DOS 6.22 on a small HD in the internal bay but I'm not thinking of that now.

Well if you're resorting to DOS, then you should try a virtual machine.
