• Well NOW I'm in trouble

    From Al Kaiser@1:142/926 to All on Wed Apr 15 17:04:35 2015
    Over the last week or so I have been configuring this computer with a Windows
    7 32 bit drive in an expansion bay so I can have the use of this XP system while I transfer my radio programs over along with the other stuff that I
    run on this computer.

    Today I tried to move Binkd and TER500. I found that Binkd will probably
    work, but found that TER500 and TERMAIL will not work in a Windows 7 environment even when run with compatability checked for running as an XP Program. This was the reason, (I believe), that many years ago after my "big" XP deskop went south I brought a couple of progam over to this computer, they would not run on Windows 7.

    There is no DOS environment IE a DOS OS in Windows 7.

    So now basicilly I'm screwed one of two ways, either stay with XP for as long as possible or try and find a program for FIDO mail for windows 7. I know there is a program called GOLDED or something like that but there is no configuration for it and I could do nothing with it. And some help that I was expecting for it never happened either. (Or do I just say bye-bye to FIDO after 30 plus years?) (Put the dog "to sleep">.

    Anyone have any suggestions? Got a program that will really work that has a Windows 7 install program? Would be nice if it worked with my external
    tagline program but who knows?

    Boy it's a real shame no one ever reverse engineered TER500 for Windows after the original programmer walked away from it many years ago. With the exception of Bluewave, this was one of the best programs I've used.

    Run "golded.exe -install" to create a base set of configuration files.

    Hi Al,

    I know this thread is months old, but I didn't see anyone
    that had corrected your statement already...

    computer with a Windows 7 32 bit drive in an expansion
    ...

    Sure there is. The NTVDM (Virtual DOS Machine) is included
    in every 32-bit version of Windows NT, including 7, 8, and 10.

    Terminate 5.0 runs fine here under Windows 10, using NetSerial
    to allow it to work with telnet instead of dialup.

    From your description, I suspect you were attempting to
    install it under a 64-bit version of Windows.

    Regards, Mike

    Terminate 5.00 will work in DOSBox 0.74 under Windows 7 64-bit with a virtual modem like NetSerial. This is the current setup I am using right now to reply to your message.

    If that's overkill would TER work in dosbox? Again it's

    Yes it does.

    Although I have not checked to see if it works with the virtual modem in DOSBox; but it works fine with the NetSerial virtual modem.

    I can confirm that Terminate (and probably others) works ok with the DOSBox 0.74 virtual modem. Just put something like:

    =============================
    [serial]
    serial2=modem listenport:5002
    =============================

    in "dosbox.conf".

    Works for me.

    It was just easier for us to make a dual boot system.

    In the long term as a desktop user, you might find that running everything in once place is easier.

    Dual booting is easy in the sense that you don't have to worry about extra work - but you are wasting the power of your PC by running an obsolete operating system natively on new hardware.

    Yeah but it sounds like you have to go through dual booting hassles.

    If your software works in an emulator or virtual machine, then you will wonder why you bothered with dual booting. Using emulation and/or VMs provides significant benefits and convenience.
