many of the locals still recoil in horror & exclaim "Oh,
no... I can't stand raw fish!" at the very mention of the
word. Here's my take on it:
1) Some people don't like fish, period. I can accept that. But fear
of the
unknown is a very different matter... and ignorance is curable.
What's the figure on the success rate? <G+D>
2) Sushi = a rice roll. Carol Shenkenberger... whom you may or may
not know
from other echoes, but who actually lived in Japan for awhile... says
so. As
one who checks up on such assertions regardless of the source I
verified this
data by consulting additional sources & I agree with Carol.
I've never known Carol for speaking "out her hat", but never checked her
facts either. From what little I know on the subject, is that freshness is paramount. Sashumi (I'm NOT checking the spelling on THAT one. :) - that
green stuff in a bowl on the side - contains the required enzymes to digest the raw fish. Fugu, (AKA: Puffer fish) is the most dangerous for the tetrudotoxin. (Not checking the spelling THERE either! |-) Prepared
correctly, it is supposed to make your tongue tingle. Too much toxin, anephelactic (This spell checker provides no suggestions so, I likely
got *it* wrong too. Apologies...) shock. This was likely from TV or a magazine/news article or three, so you already know I can be befuddled with
my facts.
Because our fish takes so long to arrive here, I can't be sure I've *ever* eaten raw fish. I've heard somebody started flying it here so it can be consumed before expiration, but for me to pay for a flight ticket for
lunch... Nope, I'll stick to my curries until I'm on a coast again. Fly me
to food = holiday. <G>
...
5) You've heard that some kind of raw fish can kill you if it's not prepared
correctly? No worries AFAIC. The cost of a single serving is as much
as the
average family of four probably spends on groceries in a whole
week.... :-))
Who can afford to fly a dead fish to your dish? <L>
Now, raw corn I can teach you how to eat. <20 minutes off the stock, and
drink an unpasturised (Opps... Don't know how to spell Luis' name either. I need to change my spell checker! 8-) beer... THAT's Canadian cuisine!
... If you think education is difficult, try stupidity out for size.
