    Haven't seen a rules posting lately, but I'm still here.... ;

    A male friend of ours, who was born in one of the ex-USSR countries, introduced us a few weeks ago to his new girlfriend... born in another of the ex-USSR countries. I hope this relationship lasts because she & I liked each other from the start! Anyway, she mentioned in conversation that the Russian language has no dialects. I don't disbelieve it. But as a native speaker of English I found myself quite surprised by the idea, and as the sort of person who consults various sources I would also like to hear what *you* think. :-)

    Thankyou. Since you run a well-known BBS with quite a large number
    of users, your input is important. But I understand why others may hesitate to
    come out of the woodwork here until you've identified yourself by name.... :-)

    Glad to hear it. For those who may not remember Mark... AKA "lower
    case lewis"... from the ENGLISH_TUTOR echo, he willingly assists other folks in
    the network whenever he can.

    This is a good echo where the Russians have always been very kind &
    patient with me. Now all we need is some Russians.... ;-)

    Russian has dialects of course, but they don't seem
    as disparate as those of English. On the other
    hand, read this one if you can:

    http://tortuga.angarsk.su/unrar/dal__w07/d_govor.txt

    That file is encoded in DOS-866, and I can help you
    with both encoding and translation.

    The Soviet Russian virtually didn't have dialiects due the strict language standard countrywide.
    Russian Russian definitly does.
