• RA crash on ZMODEM DL

From Kent Timm@1:229/728 to All on Tue Aug 12 16:36:00 2014
    Hi...

I brought my RA BBS back a couple months ago, and just now starting to see people trying to DL files, but I am seeing the board is crashing on ZMODEM downloads, and Win 7 Pro 32bit is showing an error with ntvdm.exe

Just wondering if anybody had some insite on thsi? Ymodem works fine, so I've disabled Zmodem for now.

    I'm running under NETFOSS

    hiya kent!

I brought my RA BBS back a couple months ago, and just now starting
to see people trying to DL files, but I am seeing the board is
crashing on ZMODEM downloads, and Win 7 Pro 32bit is showing an
    error with ntvdm.exe

can you be more specific? what do you mean by "crashing"? does the bbs task completely disappear? what is the error that you are seeing with ntvdm?

Just wondering if anybody had some insite on thsi? Ymodem works
fine, so I've disabled Zmodem for now.

what protocol driver are you using that's crashing? the built-in one or something external? if external, what is your command line for it?

    I'm running under NETFOSS

that's a positive :) we might have to bring mike into the discussion in case the problem is something in netfoss... what version of netfoss you are running?
have you tried a newer or older version?

I find the window the BBS was running in at the prepare to DL screen. The
last thing you would see just before a Zmodem DL starts. It's just there frozen.

what protocol driver are you using that's crashing? the
built-in one or something external? if external, what is your
Built in Zmodem. I know it was working when I first put the BBS up. I did some googling, and there are pages talking about the ntvdm.exe freezing in
Win XP for some 16bit DOS programs and an updates that needs to be removed.
but haven't found the infor for win7pro.

I'm running Netfoss 1.11, I haven't tried any other version yet. But it
could be involved, I to see an error message breifly about the pcmicro
fossil not being able to uninstall when the bbs' batch file finishes up.

I did have version 1.12 on Netfoss on for a while, but it port scan detectors seemed a bit trigger happy on some termial so I went to the last version before the port scan detected was added. I'll try a couple other version when I'm more awake.

Zmodem was working before, but i've disabled it for now, Ymodem is ok though

    thanks for the reply:)

ahhh... that's not good, to say the least...

hummm... you might want to try adding an external protocol driver or three and seeing how they work out... i think i have two or three alternative zmodem drivers that are available here... DSZ, Texas Zmodem, and another i can't think
    of right off hand...

you shouldn't have to be loading and unloading a fossil driver... load it at the beginning and leave it until the bbs shuts down... oh but wait... you may be doing it that way because of your mailer if you are running a mailer in front of RA...

netfoss 1.12 is out since 3 Aug 2014... it might be of benefit to try it...

i can't do much with that report but mike might be able to since he's more familier with the winwhatever stuff...

the last version before the port scan detected was added. I'll try

oh yeah, i had forgotten that he added some additional protection capabilities... they should be able to be disabled though... i would think so, anyway...

    ok though

    :)

    thanks for the reply:)

you are welcome... i'm still here to help and talk about stuff when folks decide to post ;) ;) O:)

netfoss 1.12 is out since 3 Aug 2014... it might be of

I didn't know, I had tried the beta, but went back to the non beta 1.11.. I just Dl'd 1.12 and going to give it a go. thanks for the info

Had a bit of trouble getting netfoss 1.12 going, AVG things it's malware.. duh.. But it worked, built in Zmodem is going now :) I'm connected from my main PC to the BBS PC and Syncterm does a nice job of looking like Telix:) THe BBS PC also runs my webserver. btw, my mailer, Argus is running Binkp only, not using it as a frontend for the board.

but i still my try some exteral protocals just for fun.. I have the "need" to have SEAlink in there. STill fun to tinker with this stuff, who knows, maybe I'll update RACall some time too.. I wonder if anybody is still using it...

would love to get a spell check on QuickEd too:) mee naught sew gud a splr

    thanks

    great!

I'm connected from my main PC to the BBS PC and Syncterm does a
nice job of looking like Telix:)

yeah, it isn't too bad... i still run telix, though... using a virtual modem...
i haven't found anything yet that beats it ;)

THe BBS PC also runs my webserver.

same here... ftp and everything... it is how i allow access to my files areas outside of the bbs... i just wish that i had some way of updating the download counters in the bbs for all the grabs done via http and ftp... oh well [shrug]...

btw, my mailer, Argus is running Binkp only, not using it as a
    frontend for the board.

ahhh... ok... you can use its other protocol capabilities, too, and not interfere with the bbs on telnet... simply adjust the port argus uses for telnet connections and advertise it in the nodelist... you might even see my frontdoor connecting

but i still my try some exteral protocals just for fun.. I have the
"need" to have SEAlink in there.

i used to have sealink but i lost it with a lot of other stuff in a crash back in the 90s... i currently have hslink, 8k Zmodem (via cexyz) and hydracom set up as externals in RA... i'm only using the cexyz protocol driver in OLMS... i don't think i have anything else external to RA that does downloads...

STill fun to tinker with this stuff, who knows, maybe I'll update
RACall some time too.. I wonder if anybody is still using it...

i think i had it at one time... i've been hunting for the CDs that had the old RADIST FDN on them so i could recover what i lost so long ago...

would love to get a spell check on QuickEd too:) mee naught sew gud
    a splr

hahaha... i'm using the old RAEdit but there are others out there which are better... IIRC, though, RAEdit has spell checking built-in but it has other problems, too... oh well...

Zmodem is working good now.. Got my first file leach online right now DLing ever scifi/fantasy GIF there is LOL I had a CD-ROM full of them from the old board and just dumped it to the harddrive since there's so much space.

yeah, it isn't too bad... i still run telix, though... using
a virtual modem... i haven't found anything yet that beats it
Yes, Telix is great. I've though bout getting a Magic Jack and hooking up my real modem again. I've head MJ can run modems ok.. I won't my that virtual modem either, but that costs money I belive, something I'm greatly lacking lately. Many if I go good at the ham flea market next month...

THe BBS PC also runs my webserver.
same here... ftp and everything... it is how i allow access
I'm playing with the idea of a mail server too. I just moved my main domain from go-dorky to namecheap because they have dynapic dns support. So I figure I could be fun to put in a mail server too. I have hmailserver sitting here, have installed it yet.

i used to have sealink but i lost it with a lot of other
stuff in a crash back in the 90s... i currently have hslink,
That sucks.. When I brough my BBS back, I restored it as it was 20 years ago first, from old 5.25" floppies :) I knew buying the good ones would pay off:)
