Former congressman Beto O'Roarke is advocating the existing wall
between the US and Mexico be torn down, due to the number of deaths
over the past ten years. IOW, he is claiming that over 4,000 people
(men, women and children) have died over the past ten years because
they had to travel through desolate terrain in order to get to the
USA so as to apply for asylum.

As far as I know, you need to travel through one of the border crossings in order to request assylum.

I don't have any answers for this, but seeing disregard for human life
doesn't suit us as a country. Watching ICE pouring out bottles of water
left for border crossers? Unconscionable. I couldn't imagine the mindset of someone who could do that.

... How would you have done it?

I would love it when people would start using "undocumented" instead of "illegal". The latter pushes them immediately into the criminal bracket while they're just looking for a better life ...

Undocumented border crossings are illegal, regardless of the intent.

Our border situation is a mess. We need more workers in California than we
let in legally, and everyone turns a blind eye to the thousands of farm
workers who work for lower wages than Americans would work for, and allow
Big Ag to sell produce competitively.

People want illegal immigration to stop, people complain about border
states going broke with welfare and human services expenses, but no one
wants to pay $10 for a head of lettuce.

I've heard horror stories about non-citizens applying for public
assistance, but most of the stories I've heard and seen are of people
trying to keep their heads down, keep off the radar and make some money to
    send home.
