    Ed,

I know that feeling! Back a few years ago i had a lightning bolt take a EK>direct hit to a phone pole in front of our house. Major damage ensued and EK>it
didn't help having surge strips and ups. Saw fire shoot out of my cable EK>modem. OUCH!

I heard of a fellow ham radio operator who had a similar experience. He had SPARED NO EXPENSE for lightning and surge protection. You name it, he bought it, he installed it...price was no object.

Unfortunately, it was no match for a direct or very close strike. His tower, mast, antennas, and coaxial cable were VAPORIZED!! The UPS units, and devices they were protecting were all destroyed. He was lucky his place didn't burn down.

Lightning dances around my apartment like an ungrounded Faraday cage during storms. One time, the strike hit the tree next to the southwest side of the building. A kink in the wiring of my alarm system screwed it up (it has since been fixed), but I had everything else (except for the refrigerator/freezer, stove, and dishwasher) unplugged. The aforementioned appliances are part of the
apartment, so I wouldn't be responsible for replacing them. However, people in my building (there are 4 apartments per building), as well as adjacent buildings, were taking electronic appliances of every sort (radios, TV's, VCR's, DVD's, microwave ovens, computers, stereos, home entertainment systems, etc.) by the truckload out to the dumpster. The surge had spread out so far that I'd say everything within a half mile was vulnerable.

    Besides, each lightning bolt:

    1) Is 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5 times hotter than the sun's surface) 2) Has 300,000 volts and 30,000 amps of electricity 3) Can strike as much as 20 miles from the parent storm (bolt from the blue)

I'm a 2 time lightning strike survivor (indirect, but close enough that I got
the shock)...however, I carry no electrical charge, and can be handled safely.

I'd rather be offline a few hours or days, rather than permanently from a lightning strike.

The Storm Prediction Center requires at least a 10% coverage of thunderstorms
to have the area noted on their severe weather outlooks, and all it takes is one rogue strike to destroy everything.

Then you should think about dumping IRex and switching to binkd as you are running a CM flag and should be able to accept incoming calls even from those who do not have a session password.

Binkd is very easy to setup. If you need help, then please let me know.

    Thanks

    PS:

    1) Where can I obtain it??

    http://download.binkd.org

    2) Will it work under Windows 7 32-bit??

Yes, there are two version that support Win32, one with perl-hooks, one
without. Look towards the bottom of the page. Latest version is 1.1a89

    3) Is it registerable?? If not, is it crippleware?? 4) If
    egisterable,

It's open source... so you can also get a linux version (it is there as
    ell
    and compile it yourself.

is it shareware?? If so, how much??

    Free.... :)

The hardest part is setting up the binkd.cfg file. Take your time and read
    the
sections and they will explain. Remember, it's been translated from
    ussian
    but it's pretty good.

That reminds me of a joke where "things got lost in the translation".
In one overseas hotel, the "English Translation" came out as "Guests
are invited to take advantage of the chamber maid". <G>

I'm sure the chamber maids enjoyed that... ;)

Marc Lewis was in my system remotely on Friday, and we fixed the
"ping issue" (I had the router set to block all anonymous connects). Sometime later this weekend, he'll work on seeing why Internet Rex
    isn't responding.

    Sounds good... :)

    Thanks for the reply.

    you are welcome...

I had Marc Lewis work my system remotely, and he fixed the "ping
issue" (I had the router set to block all anonymous connects). He'll
get with me sometime this weekend to try to get IREX working, where
    folks can connect to it.

ping is non-sequiter... traceroute is the one that matters, though... traceroute gives the info for where the connection stops... ping has no way to tell this...

FWIW: you should also see my posts in the FUNNY echo... i didn't realize that's

    I don't blame you.

I did check a utility from Portforward.com, and it shows the port is open in the router. But, Comcast must be blocking it, as canyouseeme.org can not find it.

I don't have credit cards anymore, since coming out of bankruptcy recently...and there's a "black mark" on my credit record until 2024, 10 years after exiting bankruptcy. If I knew then what I know now, I NEVER would've gotten a credit card.

And, I had no children in my life, thanks to a severe case of the chicken pox
in 1980 (that put me in the hospital for a week, and out of work at Burger King, and out of college for 2 months), then almost 20 years working around nasty solvents in silkscreen printing (like methyl-ethyl ketone)...so, as my late wife so eloquently put it, "they would't spay me, so he volunteered to get
    neutered". ;)

    So, I guess I'm in trouble. :P

Or, they had the choice of "F Or G" (sorry, couldn't resist the pun).

I doubt ComCast is blocking 24554. There are only 3-4 I know about and that normally has to do with http and smtp. Check in your router and port forward to machine that's running IRex.
