• PL/Java: considering dropping support for OS/2

From Myrkraverk@1:3634/1000 to All on Mon Dec 5 03:50:49 2011

    Hi all,

Introduction: PL/Java is a PostgreSQL module that allows Java code to run i= nside the database.=A0 I am its official maintainer.=A0 The JDBC driver for=
PostgreSQL (what is used to talk to the server with Java applications) is =
    a different and unrelated project.

I've been considering dropping the OS/2 specific code from the build system= .=A0 OS/2 is no longer officially supported platform for PostgreSQL itself.

I am not testing it on OS/2 and I am not sure anyone is using it.

If you are aware of anyone who is using it on OS/2 or might consider using =
it yourself, please speak up now.

    HI Herbert,

CC: OS/2 User and eCS Applications.

[Seems the Yahoo webmail insists on top post, oh well.]

I do know of eCS and have an unused licensed copy of 2.0 (since I had a sof= tware subscription back in the 1.2 days).=A0 I also know of the PostgreSQL = 9.0 port.

PL/Java is independent of both PostgreSQL and its JDBC driver.=A0 It is an = extension that runs Java code *inside* the database.=A0 It requires Java 1.=
4 (current release) though I have only built and tested with 1.5 so far and=
CVS is 1.6 only.=A0 It uses JNI to load the Java virtual machine and hence=
requires the JNI to be compatible with native OS/2 code.=A0 Something I'm = not sure the Odinized current Java 1.6 is.=A0 And I'm not in a position to = test it now.=A0 I have the feeling it will only run with the Golden Code Ja=
va 1.4 - but again, I'm not in a position to test.

If there is no one using it on OS/2 it is a waste of effort to try to suppo=
rt it.=A0 Currently the build support is just cruft that's in the way and b=
    it rotting.

If and only if a C application built the same way as the PostgreSQL server =
is able to use Java 1.6 JNI to create a virtual machine with the JNI_Create= JavaVM() function call will I make any effort to continue OS/2 support.=A0 =
I can provide some technical support (including source code) for anyone wil= ing to create a test application for this.

Nothing short of a support contract with 2ndQuadrant make me support anythi=
ng older than Java 1.6 since 1.5 has been end-of-lifed.=A0 Though I might s= till accept patches.

eComStation as successor of OS/2 is not only under maintenance but under ac= tive developement. So OS/2 is far from dead.

Yes, IBM has dropped support and distribution of OS/2.

There are lots of eComStation users who need active support of=A0 PostgreSQ=
L and Java asi it is needed for the OS/2/eComStation.

Please try a look at the official. home of eComStation <http://www.ecomstat= ion.con>

    Hi there,

FWIW, Paul Smedley maintains an OS/2 port (I don=C2=B4t know how current)
    of PostgreSQL.

    His web site is here:
    http://os2ports.smedley.info/index.php?page=3Dpostgresql

And his e-mail address is: paul@smedley.id.au
Keep in mind Australian time zones :)

    Good luck
