From Mike Powell@1:2320/105 to All on Sun Nov 1 12:19:00 2009
Aside from Firefox and Seamonkey, are there any other web browsers out
there that are being kept current for OS/2 Warp 4? Is Warp 4 enough of a target for ne'er-do-wells that one has to worry about keeping ones browser
as up-to-date as one does on a Windows machine?

I used to use Firefox, but it got to be a little too demanding on
resources. I switched to Seamonkey because it seemed faster, but now that
it is based on the latest Firefox code, I am hesitant to upgrade it.

Are there other alternatives for a graphical web browser that is
    lightweight and secure?

    Mike

WRT phishing, I think you need to keep current regardless of OS.

I used to use Firefox, but it got to be a little too demanding on
resources. I switched to Seamonkey because it seemed faster, but now that

There really should be no detectable speed difference between browsers based
on the same underlying Gecko versions as found in the UA string.

it is based on the latest Firefox code, I am hesitant to upgrade it.

In case it escaped your attention, if you need to print directly to your printer from the browser, you cannot use the latest FF or SM. Same
    shortcoming with SM mail.

    Felix,

So they have any intention of fixing that problem? Seems I've been
    reading about it for years.

    Hi Felix e.o.

On other lists I'm following I've read this: ========================================================================

    Dear testers,

I just finished uploading two experimental nightlies of SeaMonkey
and Firefox to my SF.net site. Get them from
    http://sf.net/projects/pmw-warpzilla/files/

The special thing of these builds over the standard nightlies is
that I have finally gotten the patches about printing workarounds
to a stage where they could be useful.

These packages react to new (maybe temporary) hidden preferences
    print.os2.supported.native
    print.os2.supported.postscript
that you can edit via about:config. They are supposed to contain a
list of comma separated printer drivers for which printing works.
Printers in the first category directly print using the OS/2 drivers,
those in the second category first produce a PS file in %TMP% which is
    then transferred to the spooler.

By default these prefs are pre-filled with "FXPRINT" and "PSCRIPT,PSCRIPT2,ECUPS", respectively, but you can add others to
test, if the programs crash or not for your favorite printer. (As an
example, I can add LASERJET to the native pref and for some drivers the
Mozilla apps don't currently crash, but that changes with the weather
and the time of the day.) For all printer drivers that are _not_ listed
in either pref, the content of the print process goes into the PDF file
(by default on the Desktop) as usual.

The problem is that I currently only have one printer (a HP PhotoSmart)
and that doesn't want to be printed to at all (it even stopped working
from other OS/2 apps using the standard OMNI driver). So I need people, especially the ones using real printers using PSCRIPT and ECUPS drivers,
    to test...

Let me know, how it goes.
    Peter.

P.S.: Sorry for not doing any other nightlies or betas/releases in the
last weeks. I thought this might be more important. ============================================================

    With kind regards,

    Henk

The test print build does work for FF with Postscript settings, which can be to
a PS printer or using eCUPS. PCL printing produces corrupted output.

The one requirement is that your printer installation needs to be clean. I had
problems until I found there was corruption in my spooler settings and fixed them.

No, WARP4 is too outdated to get seamonkey and firefox working completely -=
    they
work partially as WARP4 does not support all the extended functionality integrated with MCP2 and newer.

Yes, wComStation 1.2R is much newer than MCP2 and MCP2 is much newer as WAR= P4.

Newer means some new API unknown even on the most current fixpack of WARP4.= =20

    With ecomstation new:

    - tcp/ip 4.53 (instead only 4.0 as with WARP and 4.52 in MCP2.0)
    - use RAM up to 4GB (instead of only 2)
    - use single application addressroom up to 3,5GB (istead only 512 MB as on = OS/2
    up to WARP 4
    - multicore (tested up to 16 cores) as separate package

eCS 2.0 comes with full multicore integrated into the base system.

WARP4 fails to install on modern (since about 2000) CPUs - eComStation 1.2R=
