  • [OS2HW] Usb hub

From os24u@wisdomtree.info@1:3634/1000 to All on Thu Dec 12 14:37:04 2013

If one had usb hard drive connected to usb hub with cable from hub connected to 2 computers, would both
machines be able to read/write same usb drive?

If so would they need same drive letter?

I would think so... shared storage is common.

    No.

I'm copying this discussion to the ecs technical <eCS-Technical@yahoogroups.com> list.

I'm extremely uneasy about such a setup. Having worked with mainframes years ago with two-tailed disk drive controllers attached to separate computers, i'm fairly certain that the usb hub does not come close to providing the locking and protection mechanisms that the old dasd controllers had. Bear in mind that
in the PC world, most of the DASD controller function has been moved into the device driver, so there is no awareness of multiple access paths.
