• [OS2HW] KVM/USB Mouse/PS2 Adapter

From "conixks1"@1:3634/1000 to All on Mon Jul 9 16:25:43 2012

My grandson gave me a USB mouse for Christmas many years ago. One of the buttons is now becoming very troublesome.

It is a USB mouse. I have a KVM that uses VGA/PS2 connectors. And the mouse had been connected through the KVM using a PS2 adapter.

    It has worked fine.

I went out to purchase a new mouse. Except for off brands, it would seem that corded mice are not terribly common anymore. But a few are still available.

I purchased a Logitech M500 model mouse. I find after plugging it in and rebooting the system, it will not recognize the mouse through the KVM with the PS2 adapter. But eCs v2 will recognize the mouse directly through the USB port.

I have heard through googling, that USB mice tend to take a few seconds to be recognized by OSs wherease the older PS2 connections did not have this delay.

I guess I have two basic options.

First, find a good mouse that will work through the PS2 adapter with OS2. Anyone who has one, please share the make and model with me. Perhaps I can still find a local vendor who carries the mouse.

Or I might swap out the KVM for a DVI/USB set of interfaces. And then my task would be to find a KVM that did not exhibit this USB mouse delay problem for a reasonable price. If one for a reasonable price can't be found, I guess I'll have to live with the mouse recognized delay.

I really do not want to spend weeks and lots of money trying to find the right combination. I am hoping those with direct and current experience might give me some recomendations and/or leads to help me find something that works.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mark Vollmer

I have noticed this behaviour with my (usb) kvm when I switch back to OS2. FWIW I'm using a startech KVM - had good luck with them and they usually include the cables, while some other brands make you buy them extra.

I'm currently using with the usb kvm one of my old faithful real IBM ps2 keyboards, but the rodent (actually a logitech magic marble trackball; I hate mice!) is USB. However, when I had a PS2 kvm, I think the usb Tball worked OK with the little passive USB to PS2 adapter that came with mice for a number of years. Don't remember if there was a delay on switching back to os2 or not; don't think so.

If you are stuck, I could probably pry a spare usb in - ps2 out adapter loose for the shipping cost (should be cheap). contact me off line if needed.

My WPS had been skitzoid for many weeks, randomly acting like there was a gesture mode enabled in SeaMonkey, which I would never do on purpose. I
bought it in hopes it had nothing to do with eCS or SM. I was lucky. The Chinese Logitech (likely no more than 4 years old) had apparently turned
toast. The GE has a smaller gauge cable, but works fine with the same USB to PS/2 adapter I was using with the Logitech.

Allow me to clarify, that my existing mouse (with the button going bad) is
    a USB mouse connected through a USB/PS2 converter into a Belkin VGA/PS2
KVM unit. I was very surprised to learn the replacment mouse with usb connectivity didn't work at all. :(

When my expensive, old, no longer available, high quality, without equal, trackball's LMB ceased to be reliable, I found it relatively easy to transplant the switch from an ancient $2 serial mouse to make my trackball work like new again. You might find a similar situation by opening up your
    KVM compatible mouse.

I have been using trackballs probably since they were first sold. This
one is corded, optical, one of very few that are ambidextrous,
available, and reasonable. I have a bunch of them. They were
originally PS2 and are now USB with a PS2 adapter. http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/4680

As an aside, I have a assembly/test bench with a four port KVM. I have encountered MBs that would not access the mouse thru the KVM, and it did
not matter what the OS was.
