    Hi Bob,

    Sorry for two reasons :

    1). I haven't a clue where CLASSIC_COMPUTERis located!

It's a Fidonet echo, this particular one is (also) a gated newsgroup. It
can probably be found on most any Internet BBS, Waldo's Place is one,
    as is Doc's Place.

2). Although it's nice to reminisce about former items, I
just don't have enough hours in the week to do so these
days - 150/week on the computer (every week) is enough!

I'm a retired computer professional (not exactly by choice). I decided
a LONG time ago that if I had to sit at a computer all day at the office
I sure as heck wasn't going to do it all night too.

    Hi Bob,

Well I must be a real OS/2 nut - I always did both until I had to
"retire" back in 1995 for medical reasons [after almost getting killed
driving 80 miles to work for a 01:30 start, not once but twice by two
separate 40 ton semi-trailers (tractor-trailers to you?), one without
all their usual Christmas-tree lights, and no headlights on, on a
miserable wet night] but I had the advantage that I worked continuously variable sequences of shifts, and also a lot of them unscheduled
call-backs because someone else didn't turn up for the job which had to
be staffed 24 x 365, so it wasn't like having a day-job ever! Never ever
got bored working with the Weather Bureau in Aviation Meteorology! It's different every single day - although to the General Public it might
look like yet another sunny or rainy day, it was the subtle changes that
made it different, reporting and forecast-wise!
Once I involuntarily retired I was able to devote all the extra time I
used to spend in transit, so you know where that went into! :-)

With the infrastructure set up in Australia, BBSes weren't widely
available - and telecom fees were extremely expensive - so I never
partook of the opportunity. My connectivity was via IBM Global Services
(I used to get billed from Denmark, of all places!), and in order to get
a 14.4K modem connection I had to pay long distance charges as their
number was in Sydney 1,000km away (~625 miles), so all calls were as
short as possible, as IBM charged a base amount (~US$10/month) plus a connection-duration charge per call on top of the Telco's long distance charges.

But anyhow - I just love "My Operating System" and won't ever change it!
    :-*

    Regards,
    Mike

I worked in a number of different 24x7x365 shops. I learned to *hate*
rotating shifts and I found that I *like* to work the 'graveyard' shift (midnight
to eight, or thereabouts). In fact, after I retired from the AF in 1983 until 2004 that's the shift I worked, by choice. The 'rush hour' commuter traffic
is all going the other way <g>.

I switched from DR-DOS to OS/2 v 3.0 in 1995, upgraded to v 4.0 when it came out and subscribed to IBM until after 4.52 came out. I have over 100 boxes here -
ten of which are set up and running at least some of the time. Most are running
    a flavor of OS/2 (I have 1.2, 1.3, 2.0, 2.11, 3.0, 4.0, 4.51 and 4.52, plus eCS
    1.2R),
two are running Linux, one (an RS6000) is running AIX and one (a Sun workstation)
is running Solaris v7.0. I also have a DEC VAX, an IBM AS/400 and my own personal
IBM 9672 mainframe (the company I worked for said 'we can't find a buyer for it
    so
make it go away,' and I did).

    Hi Bob,

Me too - was that with CP/M or CP/M II?

CP/M v 2.2 is the version I had - still have FTM, and the machines to run it. Never heard of CP/M II, unless you're referring to CP/M-86 - parts of which were
swiped and included in MS/PC-DOS v 1.0 without permission of attribution.

    Hi Bob,

Yes I was referring to CP/M V2.2, not the 8086 version by DRI - yes well
aware of the downgrade that was MS-DOS,even relative to CP/M 2.2 let
    alone CP/M-86!
My CP/M 2.2 system was put to rest in 1995, after he boot PROM on it
failed - could still access the machine via the Monitor function in
hardware, and key in enough (0x0400 bytes) in hex, a nibble at a time to
set up the RST code and my table driven interrupts and the RS232C
drivers to get it booted via my 8086 Japanese system, until I had
transferred across all the assembler programs I had written and which
were only stored on non-IBM-compatible diskettes!

    Regards,
    Mike
