• [OS2HW] Quick query - Samsung ML-2525 printer

From Mike O'Connor@1:3634/1000 to All on Fri Apr 16 21:41:27 2010

    (X-posted to os2hardware and eCS-Technical)

    Hi all,

Has anyone on the group used a Samsung ML-2525 printer (mono-Laser)
    under OS/2-eCS?
Machine is USB-connected only and may be able to be connected with Paul Smedley's eCUPS, as there is a .PPD file included on its CD for use with Macintosh. also Samsung have a Unified Linux Driver for Linux, which
makes it seem hopeful. I queried Paul, but he's obviously busy at work
    in Adelaide, South Australia.

It is pretty remote from me (it's in the other EST timezone,
N.Hemisphere!), so I can't personally check it out.

    Regards,
    Mike

I've not used it but, according to the review in this month's UK
Computer Shopper (also online at <http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/printers/276670/samsung-ml-2525>), it's
    a host-based printer.

    Thanks Sid,

I read their review and as no-one has previously posted any comments on
it - I am about to post there to query why they made no mention of the Macintosh or Linux suitability! ;-)

Here's a copy'n'paste from an earlier personal e-mail of mine.

    ------------ insert -----------
I found out that the particular model does provide a PPD file on its CD
for use in CUPS with a Mac, (or with a LaserWriter driver). They also
have on their site a Unified Linux Driver.

Details of the above are at :

    http://www.samsung.com/au/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=06010400&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=ML-2525&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P

    and:

    http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200911/20091119182011250/EN/english/start_here.htm

I (later) found the Unified Linux Driver and also Smart Panel for Linux at:

    http://www.samsung.com/au/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=ML-2525&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P

I downloaded the drivers to make sure they were actually available
32.2MB (LUD) and 15.8MB for the Smart Panel.
These were the instructions on their support site:

    [Unified Linux Driver Install Guide]

    1. Make sure that you connect your machine to your computer.
Turn both the computer and the machine on.

    2. When the Administrator Login window appears, type in root in the
    Login field
    and enter the system password.

    3. Download and extract the driver.
    [root@localhost root]#tar xzf [Downloaded File Name(XXXX.tar.gz)]

    4. The driver will be extracted as ''cdroot'' folder in current path.

    5. Execute installation program.
    [root@localhost root]#./cdroot/autorun

    6. When the welcome screen appears, click ''Next'' and proceed
    installation.

    [Ubuntu OS Installation]

    1. Download and extract the driver.

    2. Open ''Root Terminal''

    3. Execute installation program.
    $ sudo cdroot/autorun

    4. After install, PPD path is set again.
    $ sudo ln -s /usr/share/cups/model/samsung /usr/share/ppd/custom/samsung

    5. Execute Configurator, and Add your printer model name by Add Printer.

    and for the Smart Panel:

    [Smart Panel Install Guide]

    1. When the Administrator Login window appears, type in root in the
    Login field
    and enter the system password.

    2. Download and extract the Smart Panel.
    [root@localhost root]#tar xzf [Downloaded File Name(XXXX.tar.gz)]

    3. The Smart Panel will be extracted as ''cdroot'' folder in current
    path.

    4. Execute installation program.
    [root@localhost root]#./cdroot/Linux/smartpanel/install.sh

    5. Smart Panel will be installed automatically and success message
    will be displayed in terminal.

    6. Smart Panel will be launced automatically after installation.

So it looks as though the people at Samsung are getting really with it! :-)
I noticed another comment somewhere about printing to it using PCL, as
    well as Postscript!

So it's definitely not your typical host-CPU-based printer!

    Regards,
    Mike

Other reviews say that it emulates (not /uses/) Samsung's proprietary
page description language which implies that it's neither Postscript nor
PCL. I suspect that the drivers you mention generate that code. Does the
Mac implementation include driver code as well, or just the ppd file?

I guess the only way to find out for sure is to try it on an OS/2-eCS
system. Does the guy you're helping actually have one or is he just

I hope not, it would be good to have another fairly cheap, current
    printer available for OS/2.

How many of those reviewers were using a windows system to review it
    with (100%?)

    Too true!

[I hate having to reformat stuff that was in an html table!]

    <ggggrrrhhhh>

Samsung have an on-line "walk you through installation/using the
    ML-2525" (same documentation applies to both a higher[with RJ45]/lower
spec printer) on a series of pages - setout like a (very familiar to Windows-users) Windows Help page - with lots of expanding sections -
actually very nice clear graphical content and always up to date of course!
It also includes the information on Macintosh OSX 10., and Linux (Ubuntu example)

    (edited) from the pages:

    Macintosh

(See my other reply as well)

The problem with this is that it covers a number of different printers
and you need to read it carefully to see which parts apply to the
printer in question. As far as I can tell the 2525 does not support
/any/ of the advanced features. including PS. It is now more-or-less
universal for printers to ship with documentation and software which
supports a whole range of printers so, in the absence of the detailed
reviews we used to get before Windows became dominant, the only way to
see which features a particular model supports is to actually get your
    hands on it!

I think I read somewhere that the ML-2525 model has (just) 8MB of RAM
    only - the 2525W has 64MB I believe.
but what does one expect from something at that Newegg price further
below, much lower than Samsung's MSRP, of US$119.99?
I guess the only way to find out for sure is to try it on an OS/2-eCS
system. Does the guy you're helping actually have one or is he just
    thinking about it?

You didn't answer this one :)

Sorry, been a very busy time here. He has already purchased it -
received it a day or two ago. I don't know what he paid for his item,
    review unread!

I note they're currently available from newegg.com in USA as follows:

Samsung ML-2525 Black and White Laser Printer:
This Samsung ML-2525 Black and White Laser Printer is on sale from
Newegg for $59.99 after $40 instant savings. Features up to 24 ppm,
monthly duty cycle of 12,000 pages, and USB connectivity. Shipping is
    $2.99. (Expires 04/19/10) = 2 days time!

    That's very cheap!

I haven't kept up with the exchange rate for AU$ to GBP lately - as a portion of my Age pension is 20% of a Jersey one, it gets too
depressing! 49 years ago, when i came here from Jersey, the AU quid was
worth the same as the NZ quid, 16 shillings in the the old lsd, but
nowadays I cringe when I catch an occasional glimpse on the TV News
shows of the exchange rate to the AU dollar (or half a quid), like 56p
    to the AU$! :-(

    (Big snip)

That should give you some idea how Samsung are improving!

(See my other reply as well)

The problem with this is that it covers a number of different printers
There's a table on that Samsung page I referred you to which specifies
    which models have what!
There are only three specific models that documentation refers to.
and you need to read it carefully to see which parts apply to the
printer in question. As far as I can tell the 2525 does not support
/any/ of the advanced features. including PS.
I wasn't expecting it to be a standalone PS printer - but the vast
majority of the printers used with CUPS/eCUPS in our case aren't PS
printers - they just have have a .PPD file available for them!
    It is now more-or-less
universal for printers to ship with documentation and software which
supports a whole range of printers so, in the absence of the detailed
reviews we used to get before Windows became dominant, the only way to
see which features a particular model supports is to actually get your
    hands on it!

You're not confusing the documents I quoted with that Samsung "Universal
Print Driver" that covers the whole Kingdom of Windows, are you?

I remember getting a PS printer driver pack from Adobe - direct - to
replace the one Apple supplied with my own LaserWriter back in 19921
That even included glossy printouts of every font by Adobe - high
    quality then!

    Hi Mark,

Nowhere near giving up yet - only just got started!
As I said in an earlier personal mail, you'll never find anything
relevant in those old W4 diskettes - the things didn't exist then!
still you're doing OK for an 83 y.o. guy whose "mind still is his most powerful computer" as Tim Bryce would say :-)
You have to use the current generation of software! In our case eCUPS! :-)

Just would be handy to have one of them here - to check it out first hand!
It's always easier that way! ;-)

    I'll keep you posted.

Have a good day in Voorhees!

    Regards,
    Mike

No, just the experience of buying printers from the major manufacturers
    - Epson, HP, Canon, Lexmark, Brother - over the last few years. They invariably came with a CD (or two) containing documentation and software
for a variety of printers in the family, with greater or lesser
capabilities than the printer I actually had.

The issue here, I think, is that you are not going to be able to tell if
this printer will work with OS/2 from the manufacturer's spec. The only
way to be sure is to try it and see.

Yes, he's still awaiting the GA Release of eCSV2.0 - he currently has
eCS1.2R, but never took out a recent SSS!
I've lost count of the number of Howto's I've distributed. I "talked him

    Hi sid,

If it works with a Macintosh, and with Linux, without any special
additional filters, as well as Windows, there's a very reasonable chance
it will work with OS/2-eCS. I haven't checked through all the files in
those listings I zipped to you privately, yet - too many "customers" :-D

    [just in!]
Hooray - hopefully - see Gene Alexander's response to my original request!

You didn't read the bit immediately before my signature?

You mean about Gene Alexander? Yes, but I don't know what the "original request" was :)

I've now seen the response: Gene is using an ML-2571N, which is a
PostScript level 3 printer. Is it safe to extrapolate his success to the
    much less capable ML-2525? I wouldn't like to gamble over 100UKP :)

It's probably best to bring this to a close, we're unlikely to achieve anything with further speculation...
