If it is a postscript printer you don't need CUPS. But to access anything beyond the basic printing you need the correct PPD file to update the OS/2 pscript driver. Unfortunately I don't know of any inkjet printers that
have postscript support anymore. So there is a need for CUPS.

It is not on hobbes as it is a part of eCS 2.0. Yes InstPDR.exe is the utility, I didn't realize it was included in eCS 2.0 RCs but that makes
sense. There is a slightly newer release on the eCS Betazone for those
with a Software Support Subscription under the "Project: Selective Install Tools" (here that is page 13) under "view all files".

instpdr_104.zip 57 kb 06/07/2008 08:03 am InstPDR is a GUI tool for installing new printer drivers. Includes a graphical frontend for importing PPD files. 1.02 (2008-06-24) provides some tweaks for the eCUPS project. 1.04 Alex Taylor

I need some help in buying a printer to replace an Epson Stylus C87.
These are my requirements in descending order of importance:

    Not the most expensive (<500.00?)
    Run under Windows (2000, 7)
    Run under Windows and eCS
    Print photographs well
    Print Text
    Either laserjet or inkjet type.
    Ethernet preferred, or USB

Can anyone make some suggestions for me?

You don't mention if you need color. If you don't, there are a number of decent lasers available
for well under $500. If you do, you are probably better off with an inkjet for
    good photo printing;
look for one that will work under eCS and that has separate ink cartridges for each color, or at
least one for colors and one for black; check carefully for one that has a reasonable cost per
    page.

personally?? i'd spend some $$$ and get a known working printer that isn't one of the cheap ones where $$$ are made on ink... we found a HP990CSE that has a parallel connection as well as a USB one... we use the parallel hookup and share it across our network... even without the network, this unit works for all hardware connection OS offerings... *nix, *bsd, DOS, OS/2, winwhatever (up to vista)... for old school stuff, this is the bee's knees... we paid $US900 for is several years ago... if something like it is available today, i'd definitely look at it... however, we also have an all-in-one that has wireless and wired network connections available and doesn't require a "dedicated" machine to be able to use it... this one, unfortunately, doesn't work with the older OS stuffs... my Kubuntu 8 and 9 machines can talk to it as well as my w2k
    and higher boxes...

personally, (again) i'd be looking for the best old school stuff if i could find it without encroaching newer updates on my network...

the real "gotcha" here is that ink cartridges are an ongoing expense whereas the cost of the machine is not... this is why HP and other printers companies are no longer in the business of making their $$$ by selling good printers but are making their $$$ by selling over-priced ink and cartridges... why do "you" (generic) think that the ink cartridges now carry chips and electronics in them
to disable them after a certain date? ;) :?

actually, CUPS is on worse than the old LPD daemons that have been in use on *nix boxes for yonks... indeed, CUPS has overtaken LPD in the last 5+ years and
that mainly because it is easier to install, work with and also handles a lot more printers than the old LinePrinterDaemon ;)

Are you willing to use CUPS on OS/2 (eCS) ? It does have a simple wpi
install process now, but it is a little more complex than a native OS/2 driver. The advantage being that a far wider range of printers are
    supported.

If you are willing to use CUPS/2 - I recommend the Canon Pixma range -
they are very good for photo printing and some models also have the
ability to print directly onto CD or DVD discs (in case that's of
interest). I've had my Canon Pixma IP4500 a couple of years now and am
very happy with it and how it operates under eCS using CUPS/2. Most if
not all features that you have under windows are also available via CUPS.

I love my Brother MFC-9840CDW, but the photos on Laser photo paper are
washed out. But it is great for document printing. And you can scan
things and FTP or email the image over the network. I use a Canon Pixma Mini320 to print photos directly off of SD cards.

That is the problem with many of the inkjets. They change the models so
often and their isn't any compatibility with the older models.

    Yes of course!

I did want to highlight that using CUPS/2 is not as straight forward as
simply installing a printer driver however.

This appears to be the latest version of the zip files: http://www.os2site.com/sw/drivers/printer/cups/cups-1.4rc1-os2-20090728.zip and http://www.os2site.com/sw/drivers/printer/cups/cups-driverd.zip and http://www.os2site.com/sw/drivers/printer/cups/cups-usb-backend-20090309.zip and
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/eCUPS003.wpi <ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/eCUPS003.wpi> the latest wpi package

To understand the complexities, you may want to read the instructions at
the location below. These highlight the several components that have to
    work together.
    http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/CupsPort
    and
    http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/HowTo

You should also refer to the list of supported printers as even CUPS
does not support all printer models although where there are families of printers that use the same protocol, you can use a similar models
driver, for example I run my Canon Pixma IP4500 with the IP4500 CUPS
driver, however I run my HP Officejet 6310 MFC (printer component)
using the HP OJ 7110 driver. There is an extra administration console
that you need to use to set up the printer(s) but once set up, you can
simply use the printers from applications as normal.

Considering all facts it looks to me postscript printers aren't
that much more expensive. Fore example, inkjet cartridges come at appalling prices whereas these for lasers are "only" expensive.

the real "gotcha" here is that ink cartridges are an ongoing expense whereas the cost of the machine is not... this is why HP and other printers companies are no longer in the business of making their $$$ by selling good printers but are making their $$$ by selling over-priced ink and cartridges... why do "you" (generic) think that the ink cartridges now carry chips and electronics in them
to disable them after a certain date? ;) :?

However, for most users, postscript printers are either too hard to
find, or too expensive, so CUPS is worth worrying about :)

Hitherto I've worried with CUPS for weeks (all together) with as a
result NIL. Worries include the GUI probe from the UK which was
assuming we all only install to a drive "C:" .
I'm sorry, but as it stands now the CUPS thing isn't meant for
    simple human beings.

actually, CUPS is on worse than the old LPD daemons that have been in use on *nix boxes for yonks... indeed, CUPS has overtaken LPD in the last 5+ years and
that mainly because it is easier to install, work with and also handles a lot more printers than the old LinePrinterDaemon ;)

I need some help in buying a printer to replace an Epson Stylus
C87. These are my requirements in descending order of importance:

    Not the most expensive (<500.00?)
    Run under Windows (2000, 7)
    Run under Windows and eCS
    Print photographs well
    Print Text
    Either laserjet or inkjet type.
    Ethernet preferred, or USB

Can anyone make some suggestions for me?

I am tired of buying reconditioned gray market printers from Fry's
for which you can hardly find cartridges.

personally?? i'd spend some $$$ and get a known working printer that isn't one of the cheap ones where $$$ are made on ink... we found a HP990CSE that has a parallel connection as well as a USB one... we use the parallel hookup and share it across our network... even without the network, this unit works for all hardware connection OS offerings...

I find that my color laserjet, Brother HL 4070CDW, works well in eCS using the standard HP C 9500 laserjet driver. There are limitations however, for instance, the maximum DPI is 600 and double sided printing is not available, This printer is fully functional when used in a Windows guest in Virtual PC when hosted from eCS.

I think the original poster said he was fed up with searching for old
models in any case and he wants a current model.

From recent posts, the only advice I can rely is look for a postscript printer (non-host aka win-printer, so that the logic board is in the
printer) and APPARENTLY if you have the PPD file for the printer you can update the generic OS/2 PSCRIPT driver to support the printer. NOTE: I
have not done this - only read that it is possible in some posts.

The other option is CUPS/2 - check what printers it supports, but even
it (I think) is a little out of date on printer models as it takes time
for the support to appear for a new model unless provided for Linux-CUPS
    by the manufacturer.

I tried eCUPS with an Espon Stylus Photo 1400. This is a current model and
it is supported by eCUPS. That said I have been able to print a test page under eCUPS however I got something wrong in the installation and have not been
able to print regular pages on the Epson in eCS yet.

I hope this helps & Happy New Year.

If you've got as far as being able to print a test page successfully,
    perhaps the notes at:

No the HP C Laserjet 9500 driver, though I've also used the HP C Laserjet

the Postscript driver doesn't work with (mostly just Lucide at this point).

There is really only one postscript driver but you can add supported
printer models to it if you have the windows or Linux .PPD file. Alex
Taylor wrote a gui utility (instpdr) that makes it easy to update
PSCRIPT.DRV with a ppd file. I'm pretty sure I got it off of the
eComStation BetaZone. If you don't have access to that you can just use pin.exe but I've always had problems with that.
