I am not really sure of your sources of information but you should be
very aware of it. If someone beats you up because they hate you, they
will get more harsh punishment than if they beat up one of your gay
friends. The act is identical but the treatment under the law is
different. I can only imagine your reaction to hate crimes if the
litmus test was religion.
