Hi Walter.. I recently acquired a previously-owned 2ndGen 8gb. I primarily use it an upgrade from my 256MB 3-line LCD display MP3 player. But I
am intrigued with the possibilities of viewing .XLS files and sharing other files over a LAN. Do you use any tools/apps to transfer files to/from the ipod over a local LAN?

I have one of those, but havent heard of anything that allows a direct transfer
of files over a LAN. There are several programs available that allow you to manage files through a direct USB connection; they generally act as a substitute for iTunes. Media Monkey and CopyTrans are two that I have used. I highly recommend CopyTrans for backups and restores of your files. WinAmp is supposed to do it as well, but I never could get it to work for me. Not sure if
it actually supports the iPod touch.

As far as networking goes, the only thing I have ever done is web surfing & Email via wireless connections. The weather and world clock internet apps are pretty cool, too.

Other than iTunes/AppStore, no I've not done any file transfers, except for occasionally looking at a file attachment in an email I've received...when thery're in a format the iPod can open.

Thanks for the info. CopyTrans sounds like a winner.

In the meantime, decided to go with FileApp (free). It solves
the "transfer to iPod over the LAN" very nicely. I love the way
it makes my iPod associate as a destination on my local lan
(wi-fi) and all I have to do is drag-n-drop files to it from any
pc on the lan. It also allows me to delete files directly on the
iPod without needing to use iTunes and without being connected to
    any pc.

The built-in weather app is simple and concise. I might check
for the status of any new email if I am near a free wi-fi spot,
but I don't like using the iPod for replies.
