    All,

    I'm trying to figure out how to connect my grandstream ht701 to Ubuntu. Wondering if anyone has any experience with them? I'm trying to add dial-up to my BBS

    Are you using the FSX port to plug your modem into from Ubuntu?

    The HT-701 would log into your SIP account (whether it's an IP-PBX or an
    ITSP) to accept phone calls and route them to the FXS port.

    I use an HT802 using a SIP account through our company IP-PBX (Grandstream UCM6510) for our Konica 454 copy machine to receive faxes, works well so far.

    I've never used it to carry modem signals but I imagine it would work without having to change too much by way of CODECs, might have to experiment with
    T.38 on or off, even though that's for Faxing, it is similar to computer
    modems as far as signaling goes.

    VOIP and V.90/90/34 etc. modedms are NOT going to work, reliably or at all.

    Fax V.27/29/17/34/34b etc. are transmitted via standard for FAX OVER IP known as T.38... Its not the same signalling over "SIP line" as a POTS line
    If you want dial up you will need a POTS line and modem or ISDN BRI if you can still get it.. most have have cut it off, unless you had it already.

    Few users will have dial up of any form... seems to be some sort of IP based conncetion via like telnet etc.. to replace the modem connect.

    Yeah, I've heard the highest reliable speed is 9600 baud, anything else it's too many errors.

    I'm giving up on the grandstream. I DO know a few Sysops/users using Magic Jack for in and outbound modem transmission.

    The ones I've talked to, I've heard more good than bad.

    I like the idea Nick Andre is doing. He has a AHOI VOIP (think that's how it's spelled) gonna use that with the Magic Jack, w/ google voice. Think that's the route I'm gona go too

    Maybe I do not understand what AHOI is but, if you use all three of those aren't you going to have *three* VOIP carriers where you only need one?

    I currently have Magic Jack for my voice line and I don't need google voice
    or any other VOIP service/app/device, except a telephone to hook to it.

    I would assume that using VOIP for modem calls would be the same except I
    would need to hook a modem to my Magic Jack instead of a phone.

    exactly... and you can hook the phone to the modem's passthrough port so it'll work except when the modem is online :)

    (I'm sure I spelled it wrong) AHOI is a brand of a VOIP device

    ..and I'd need 2 numbers for both modems. I'd like to find a device that I can do that with. and with the way Nick is doing it, the phone number he has is free, because it's through Google voice, Magic Jack is what? 30 a year?? Regards,
