  • Fixing Page SysOp in Mystic Linux

    Hey all!

    So if anyone who runs Mystic on Linux knows, the Page SysOp option on the
    main menu is broken. Choosing it doesn't do anything. While a few folks have done what I have done, I assume, I wanted to just lay out what steps I took
    for future SysOps or people trying it out, to know how you can get this
    feature working. So I wrote up a blog post for my BBS blog and wanted to
    share it here...

    TL;DR: I installed mpg123 and used the that to play an mp3 of a Star Trek SFX that I made a 30 second loop of, while having Mystic show a box to the user letting them know the Sysop has been paged.

    Since most distributions don't have an all encompassed "default sound" it was never fully filled out with anything - leaving it to the user to choose how they wanted to do it. However the way you did it is definitely the way I would go as well. :)

    Do you manage your own servers? If you are not running an IDS/IPS yer doin' it wrong...

    i have something like 40+ page tunes here in "RAMUSIC" format... they're not exactly the same as what i showed in my response but i think they are close enough to be easily converted in a script... i'll see what i can do over the next days if you're interested and get the beep method working ;) ;) ;)

    on my ubuntu box i did the following to test with...

    sudo modprobe pcspkr
    sudo apt-get install beep

    to keep it permanent, edit "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf" and comment out the
    "blacklist pcspkr" line toward the bottom of the file... then it will be added at boot...

    i have converted the page files i mentioned above... i'm going to try another conversion format, too... that and i need to see if i can locate the source for
    beep2 and see if it will work... if it does, it will provide a better way of scripting than what i'm currently using with beep... but it works! close encounters, sweet child o mine, blueberry hill... i wrote a script to convert the whole lot otherwise it would have been much too tedious...
