From Bob Ackley@1:300/3 to Jeff Binkley on Sun Dec 13 06:16:26 2009
Replying to a message of Jeff Binkley to Bob Ackley:

Well now, daggummit, lookie here! Religion ain't t' make ya
happy, theys supposed to set you free!

Organized religion has done a pretty fair job of enslaving
people over the past five or six thousand years.

Not as much as communist, socialist and dictatorial
    governments.

I think organized religion beats all of them - note that in many
cases the religion was allied with the governments...

How many millions have died due to
    governments ?

R J Rummel wrote a book on exactly that subject, it's titled
"Death by Government." Of course, he only researched back
to about 1900. The answer is tens of millions - and that's
in less than a century... Go back six millenia and the numbers
    are uncountable.

That is pure, unadulterated, psychobabble and has no connection to
    reality.

And just how do you know this?

Your church inform you of it, the same way Scientology teaches that RS>psychiatry is false?

Scientology is more a danger to society than a religion in the true sense.

    Mormonism is far above Scientology.

The fact is, this study is goring your particular sacred cow, Ed, namely RS>your own belief that those without religion are unhappy.

Its amazing to see you make statements like that sometimes, knowing your circumstances in life.

Maybe if you had a little religious upbringing, you'd have learned more about self-reliance than you know.

You might have developed the inner strength of character to be a success in life.

You might have learned to finish things you start, to discharge the responsibilities you take on voluntarily, like the Air Force.

You might have developed the inner strength to overcome your `headaches' by a little perserverence and self-determination.

You might have developed a personal desire to be as honest and truthful as you could possibly be, whatever the personal cost.

You might have gained the capability to ignore your personal sufferings and be a productive, self-supporting individual.

You laid down in life because of a few headaches, which you point to as why
you are in the circumstances you are.

If you had gotten a little religion when you were younger, you might not believe the `mystic' side of it, but the lessons in personal morality, self- reliance, caring for others, overcoming personal adversity in your own life, and giving a little of your success to others, would be priceless.

I see people every day who are in far worse physical circumstances than you, who go to work and support themselves. People who have to live their life confined to wheelchairs. One individual in a wheelchair works as a stock
chaser and customer's aid in Home Depot locally. Another has to ride the trolley downtown every day to work.

They do for themselves in `spite' of their physical limitations.

With a little religious instruction in your life, you might have been able to do for yourself in spite of yours as well, instead of using yours as an
excuse to lay about doing nothing all day.

I've watched you disparage religion out here for many years, now, and you've only made it obvious to me that you know very little, if anything, about religion, or its uses.

Nobody has to `have' the belief that those without religion are unhappy. A glance at *you* is enough to pretty well clinch it! *You* are the poster boy for exactly what you denounce.

I'd advise you to do a little studying on `religion', and its moral, and character-building principles, before you denounce anyone for what you
    percieve as their `beliefs'.

As is usual with you, instead of putting some thought into your words before replying, you cut loose with ingrained hatred.

    "Far above" my Aunt Fanny.

The rest of my post to you aparently didn't invoke any self-examination on
your part. You totally ignored it, and went for the `hate religion' response you are so noted for.

You are fifty years old now. More than half your life is over with, you are on the down-side of your existence now, and you have nothing in your life except cute emoticons, video games, a complete dependence on others for your daily subsistance, and not one single accomplishment that you*, personally, are totally responsible for. Nothing you can point to in your life, of any real accomplishment, and say you `did that on your own'.

Maybe some of the principles of a decent religion might have given you a
little stability in your life, a little more self-reliance and personal pride, and less immaturity in your upper-middle age.

It wouldn't have hurt you. Might have done you a lot of good.
