• Mezzanine to Go Silent After 20 Years

From Walter Bowen@1:393/11 to All on Sat Jun 4 12:16:05 2011
After 20 continuous years online, The Mezzanine will be retired on its 20th anniversary. The Mezzanine first went online on June 18, 1991 as Warp One BBS and was later redubbed The Mezzanine. It's been a long run, and I'm happy to say we still draw new "callers" from time to time.

In these tough economic times the extra costs associated with maintaining the legacy computer equipment and the dialup line have become tougher and tougher to support, and the time has finally come to say goodbye. To all you Mezzanine users who have enjoyed the BBS over the years, thanks for dropping in from
time to time and making this a more interesting place to visit.

To Michael Alyn Miller who continued to support the Hermes II BBS software package that hosts this board, you have my great thanks and best wishes in all your future endeavors. It's been fun.

    Happy BBSing, everyone.

    Walter

Hello Walter. Sorry to hear that you will be shutting down The Mezzanine. I suppose that will make the Armageddon BBS the new granddaddy of Macintosh
BBSes that still run on Hermes, and which are accessible via telnet. My BBS
has been online since late 1993 or early 1994. I can't really remember now. However, I did take it down for a number of years before putting it back
online in 2008. We still get a few new visitors every week, and even a few regulars, but it is definitely not like it was fifteen years ago. I wish
you the best in all that you do. Feel free to stop by if you ever have the time.

If you would like to be the official moderator of the "HERMES_SYSOPS" echo, please feel free to do so!

It would be good to have a successor.

Will try to stop by from time to time!

Oh gosh...and exactly who would I be moderating? There is no one here. Since February of 2010, there have been 35 messages posted in this echo, and all
but three of them were posted by you and I. Michael posted one of the other three, a new SysOp posted one, and then Daniel O'Leary posted the third one.
I could continue to submit the monthly MOD RUL and MOD UPD files to Tom's address if you want, and post them here each month as well, if you want to email them to me, along with your password...or, we could just let this echo die once and for all. It is up to you. Just let me know.

    Thanks.

Let's not let the echo die quite yet. Someone should go through the ECHOLIST motions if that's what it takes to keep this thing around.

Walter: If you send me the instructions I can submit the moderation paperwork.

    Thanks,
    Michael Alyn Miller

Hello Michael. If you look at the date of my last response to Walter, it has been a full month now, and he still hasn't responded here in the echo, or by sending me the necessary information -- MOD RUL, MOD UPD or his current moderator password -- to my email address, as I had requested. He mentioned shutting down the Mezzanine on its 20th anniversary, which I assume would
have been on June 18th, so I am wondering if he even still has access to
this echo. Well, I imagine he does if he is visiting any other BBSes that
carry this echo. Anyway, I suggest that you contact him by email. I am sure
you already know what his email address is. If not, I believe that I still
have a current address for him, which I can email to you if you need it.

Also, can you please look at some of the older messages here. I've been mentioning a peculiar problem that I've been having with the file manager. After I upload certain files, they have a file size of 0kb when you list
them in a directory. Those same files will have a negative sign -- or a dash
-- in front of the first bullet in the file manager, or else have a dash
right after the first bullet in the file manager. I've tried deleting the troublesome files and re-uploading them, but the problem still persists. In fact, I have deleted the entire file directory and recreated it, and re-uploaded all of the files, and the problem still persists, so I don't
    know what else to do.

Also, did you ever figure out why the beginning is getting chopped off of
    web URL's?

What ever happened to your plans to create some new externals using the
Fourth language, or whatever it was called?

Believe it or not, but I still do get a few new users each week, although
the vast majority of them are one-timers with few repeat visits.
