• Hermes File Manager Problem Negative Size

From Jeff Snyder@1:345/3777 to All on Mon Mar 7 03:34:00 2011
Hello Michael, Walter, or any other Hermes SysOp who may still check this
    echo.

I have been having a problem with the File Manager for quite some time now, which I haven't been able to resolve yet.

The gist of it is this:

When I upload a certain file using the File Manager, Hermes is reporting the file size with a negative sign in front of it.

If I log in as a regular user and go to the file transfer menu, and then
list the files in that particular directory, it is showing the file size for the same file as being 1k.

I now have one directory, for example, which has four files in it which are showing a file size of 1k.

If I go to that same file directory using the File Manager, those same four files have the negative sign in front of their file size.

Deleting the files from the File Manager -- including deleting them from the hard drive, and removing the data and upload credit, and then uploading the files again has not helped. The same problem still keeps reoccurring.

In fact, even shutting down Hermes and rebooting it does not fix the
problem. Logging off and then logging back on again also does not fix it.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with the File Manager? If so, how
    did you resolve it?

    Thanks!

When I upload a certain file using the File Manager, Hermes is reporting the file size with a negative sign in front of it.

It has been a long time since I've even tried uploading files, so I'm pretty rusty. However, I seem to recall occasionally seeing some odd behavior like that when the file path setup was corrupted. Might appear to be uploading,
but they don't go anywhere, yet the directory still gets updated.

My advice would be to doublecheck the accuracy of the directory path setup.
Has any part of the path been altered from the root level to the end
directory? Even a single character difference might do it.

If that isn't it, then maybe running a utility like Diskwarrior or TechTool
Pro to rebuild the volume directory might help. Have you recently replaced
the hard drive or moved things around. I'm assuming if you have, you've already considered those things and made whatever setup adjustments that would be appropriate.

My guess is that something could have gotten corrupted and you may need to rebuild a file directory, or try creating a new file directory from scratch with all the setup steps and see if the problem persists with a completely new file directory.

MichaelAlyn might be able to examine the directory data files to determine if there is corruption.

Not sure what else I can recommend. Most of my file directories are static
and can't take uploads because they are actually CD images.

    Walter

Hello Walter. Thanks for your responses.

Well, the files are definitely -- and physically -- on the hard drive, and
in the appropriate directory. My BBS runs on an 11-year-old 500 MHz DP G4 mini-tower that sits right next to me, so it is just a matter of using our
LAN to transfer the files to the BBS, and then to upload them using Hermes' file manager.

I went ahead and recreated the file directory in question under
Setup/Transfers but the very same problem persists. Four of the files are
still showing a file size of 1k, so I am lost.

I am really trying to avoid running Drive Genius, because that would mean
down time for our entire web operations, which obviously, is not good. I suspect that wouldn't help the problem anyway.

To answer some of your questions, the hard drive has not been replaced, and nothing has been moved around in many months.

What I might do is actually remove the entire directory from the hard drive
-- including the files -- delete the directory from the setup again, create
a new one, move the files back into it, and then upload them again. The
hassle with that approach is that the SysOp command "//uploadall" no longer appears to be working, so I need to upload the files manually one at a time
    in the file manager. :(
