• Leopard Terminal Settings For BBSing

From Jeff Snyder@1:345/3777 to All on Thu Dec 17 18:22:00 2009
Special thanks go to our Armageddon BBS member Michael Beaveridge -- a.k.a. Tabaliah. It was through Michael that I recently learned that Mac OSX's Terminal program is capable of properly displaying BBS PC-ANSI graphics on Leopard and Snow Leopard machines. I was never successful at achieving this
on my Tiger machine. This is made possible by a special Terminal settings
file that Michael created specifically for these machines. If you prefer to
use the Terminal in order to log on to our BBS -- or to any BBS for that
matter -- you can download the terminal settings file from our files area. Simply use the file name "LeopardTerminalSettings.zip" once you go to our
File Transfer Menu. You can also download the same zipped archive from our Armageddon BBS web access page at the following URL:

Before choosing to use the Terminal app as your telnet client for BBSing,
you should be aware of a few things.

Being as BBSes rely upon the XMODEM, YMODEM and ZMODEM file transfer
protocols in order to download files, and being as the Terminal is a
Unix-based program which does not utilize these transfer protocols, be
advised that it is not possible to initiate file downloads on any BBS using OSX's Terminal application. This includes the Armageddon BBS.

In short, if you wish to download files from our BBS, you will have to use another program, such as ZOC or SyncTERM on OSX, or DataComet or my stripped down version of the Public Address BBS software on Classic Macs. These apps
are also available in our files area, as well as downloadable from our Armageddon BBS web access page.

There is some good news though. You can, however, use the Terminal
application to do the following on the Armageddon BBS, as well as on other BBSes:

    * Read and post both local and networked messages
    * Send BBS email and netmail
    * Read files in our BBS's online library
    * Play games and use the other utilities on our BBS
    * Engage in live chat with the SysOp or other BBS members

If you have any questions or comments regarding the Armageddon BBS, or
BBSing in general, please feel free to contact me at my web email address,
or by sending me an email here on the Armageddon BBS, or by posting a
message in the appropriate message conference here on the BBS. If you are persistent, you may possibly even be able to catch me in live chat on the
BBS if you try hard enough and are able to catch my attention.

    Happy BBSing!
