• Espomen Chat

From Rick Ekstrom@1:261/38 to All on Thu Nov 10 11:08:20 2016
Janis, the US Mensa web site is undergoing a major redesign under a new supplier (I won't call it an upgrade since it removes at least one option from member-users), and it will be down for our usual Friday Espermenso Chat.

So heads up (fwiw), we'd like to do it on Filegate this week (2016 November 11), GMT 23:00 (5pm US-CST; 18:00 EST), for about an hour. I'm off to check do I remember how to use our old Espomen Chat by telnet, but in case I get last minute joinees who are telnet-incapable, a brief reminder please, how to get to
that general Chat from the web logon?

    Thanks.
    Dankon,
    Rick

PS: (This is topic relevant so I don't require it to be in Esperanto, anyone who want a translation anyway, please ask).

I don't think it's possible to use the chat feature of BBBS from the web interface... I'd have to check to be sure though :(

    Take care,

Of course Chat Rooms identify people by name, so some sort of login is necessary. But back when you and I first started Espomen here, you told me how
to get to a generic Chat Room by entering first from the web, without Telnet, and David Overley and I tried it out. It worked. Just the one Chat, not a separate personalized one, but that's all we need.

In the meantime, my Ubuntu 16.04 has been unable to log on to filegate.net for at least the last several months, and both the US and worldwide Mensa hosts have stopped letting me into their chat rooms -- I think it's three separate problems that all came together at the same time, very inconvenient for the weekly Espermenso Chat.

THE US MENSA one farmed the whole operation out to an outside service that rewrote it all from scratch and never got around to re-installing Chat, they seriously don't believe that anyone uses that stuff any more, despite repeated requests. -- I think there and here and worldwide Mensa are three separate problems that all came together at the same time, very
inconvenient for the weekly Espermenso Chat; which would be today (2017 Aoril 7
    Friday).

    Any help would be appreciated

Anyone who wants to use the Espomen chat room here needs to use telnet or telephone-modem to connect to <<Prism but please keep reading for important instructions. BTW, I checked with the author of BBBS, and chat is _not_ included in the WWW interface.

I don't think it's possible to use the chat feature of BBBS from the web

NOTE: I had to change the telnet port over here, I'm sure that is your
    problem.

The telnet port is normally run on port 23 on a computer. I had to change my computer to use port 2030 because of hackers. I will give you instructions for
getting on telnet here, and for getting to the espomen_chat area at the end of this message.

I)To get to <<Prism's telnet interface: You must specify port 2030. So instead
of entering filegate.net on your terminal program, you must specify filegate.net on my port 2030. If your terminal program does not let you enter a
port, I'd say find another comm program that will :) Most of the comm programs
I've ever used will let you specify the port.

II)How to get to the espomen_chat room:

    1) log on via telnet to filegate.net port 2030 as a user. 2) From any menu on <<Prism:
    Type: chat
    Type: g (group chat)
Type: /REP (to see the chat rooms set up here)
    Type: /j #espomen_chat

Now if you type /REP again you'll see you are in the bbs's espomen_chat room.

Just type, and other members in that room will be able to see what you enter.

    To quit chat:
    Type: /q [enter]

    3) To join IRC on another site from Prism: If you want to go to IRC to visit loglan, an IRC chat room Rick mentioned to me regarding an esperanto-like chat room, you can join IRC from the group chat.

You have to use the % sign to let the bbs know you want to send out to IRC. If
you type /? you'll see the bbs's help screen, which shows you how to use the % sign.

    /IRCJ
    /j %#loglan

To type a messae to an IRC member you see, type:

%nick (message) where %nick is the person you want to talk to and message is your text.

    To leave IRC, type this:
    /IRCQ

    Lots of info here...

    Hope this helps.
    Take care,
    Janis

Simple Linux command line telnet uses the port number right after the address, just that simple.

    $ telnet filegate.net 2030

    works fine.

Hey, that is fantastic. And yes, linux is nice that way :) I wasn't sure what
    you were running.

Here is a web link you can try... I'm not sure it will work:

    telnet://filegate.net:2030/

You've got to have telnet enabled in your web client.. maybe this is what you are remembering? Essentially you are using the web to use telnet <grin>

    :)
