Japan Tsunami Video

None of the Japan earthquake and tsunami videos that I have
watched to date really convey the true impact of, or
demonstrate the full power of, a large tsunami; the reason
being that, for obvious reasons, none of them could be shot
right at eye level, and right in front of, the approaching
tsunami, unless the camera person wanted to die.
Some news sources are now saying that the Sendai tsunami may
have been up to ten meters in height. At thirty-nine inches
per meter, that is a surging wall of water 32.5 feet in
height, which is taller than a three-story building. If we
consider that a tsunami moves at over 500 m.p.h. in the open
ocean -- although they slow down considerably by the time
that they reach shallow water and land -- that is an
extremely powerful force to contend with.
Yahoo news is now reporting the following:
It ranked as the fifth-largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and was nearly 8,000 times stronger than one that devastated Christchurch, New
Zealand, last month, scientists said.
The official death toll stood at 413, while 784 people were missing and
1,128 injured. In addition, police said between 200 and 300 bodies were
found along the coast in Sendai, the biggest city in the area of the quake's epicenter. An untold number of bodies were also believed to be lying in the rubble and debris. Rescue workers had yet to reach the hardest-hit areas.
As I write this, strong aftershocks measuring over 6.0 on the Richter Scale
-- some of them originating in the same area as the original earthquake --
are continuing to rock the region.

Finally, below is a link for a Japan tsunami video from NHK that I am now temporarily hosting on our web server. I am not going to keep it there too long, as I don't want to overburden our server. As you watch it, you will
see dozens and dozens of two-story homes and buildings just being bulldozed over by the tsunami. Mind you, most of the buildings are probably wooden,
and are not made out of concrete blocks, like we do here. In the latter part
of the video, you will also see dozens of cars and other vehicles just being pulled along by the massive wave.

As I told my daughter, if that earthquake had occurred inland, and not
eighty miles out in the Pacific Ocean, it would have resulted in
considerably more destructive damage. If the epicenter had been closer to Tokyo, no doubt the entire city would have ceased to exist at all. As I mentioned before, we had a 7.9-8.2 quake here not quite two decades ago. If
I understand things correctly, the one that just hit Japan was at least one hundred times stronger, maybe more. I don't fully understand the math behind the Richter Scale insofar as magnitude is concerned. It's been a while since
I looked into the subject. At any rate, I wouldn't even be writing this now
if the Japan earthquake had struck here. I'd probably be standing in line waiting to be measured for my wings. :)
