    ...

In the DOS setup hubby did for me, there's FTP too, he says
he fixed the buggy one in the WATTCP package (FTP07) for
me. He says there's a partially fixed version of that,
same name, out there, but he couldn't find it. Of course,
none of these are secure, as you say.

there is sFTP which is secure but i don't/can't set it up here as there
is no software doing that available for the OS on this machine...

Hubby says you should be able to get a secure one for
Linux, but he doesn't think there's one for DOS or OS/2.
He'd been thinking about adding secure sockets to ours, but
hasn't done so as of yet.

Since pretty much everything I use FTP for is accessible
anonymously, other than my own site, I use FTP and don't worry
    about security.

    SMTP services, I think. :-(

INdeed, but using the att.yahoo etc. server requires an
additional authentication stage not available to most of us
using the older pop3/smtp stuff. IN fact, many times smtp
didn't even require the password stage.

    Hi Richard,

I am sorry to hear that att.yahoo etc. is giving us DOS users problems.

A couple of years back when I got my DSL account with sbcglobal.net,
at&t was using yahoo way back then.

I found out the hard way, my first try at setting up an account, just by entering ONLY the part of the email address I wanted to use, just up to
the AT SIGN, but I didn't enter the AT SIGN or the ISP name, and I wound
up with a AT yahoo.com suffix added to the end of my email address.

SO I had to re-enter my email address AT sbcglobal.net to get the at&t
account that I was really wanting to have. ;-)

The old at&T servers, not utilizing yahoo are usable with
any mail client you can grab hold of, and despite the
assurances to the contrary of their tech support still *do*
    operate.

I am glad you are getting some success, from all the troubles att is
    giving to you.

HOping to end run the problem completely when some more
local networking is set up, and then we can just dsl the
whole thing and handle our email locally. THe important
thing is keeping this dos box on my deks humming, and,
networked <g>. I've done too much customization to want to
    lose it <g..

YES!, You don't want anything messing up!

I wonder if the pop/smtp thingy that the wizard (I think) wrote (or RW>NB> at least modified for me) has the ability... It may well... I think RW>NB> that frontiernet may require more also, but I could be wrong... If RW>NB> it would be helpful, I could ask him... :)

MIght be. There's an authentication layer on smtp now as
wlel, and an additional with pop3 as well as username and
pw. Any other at&T mail users here? IF so you know what
    i"m talking about.

    Richard,

I have been lurking in the DOS echo for a long time.

And yes, I have read several of your messages about at&t.

I have a DSL subscription with sbcglobal.net, another alias for at&t.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird to exchange my POP3 and SMTP email.

    sbcglobal.net uses Yahoo.com services.

I haven't had any problem during the time you have been writing about
    your problem.

When I set up Thunderbire I remember reading some of TBs help files
about using TB to exchange email with Yahoo.

I also logged on directly to my sbcglobal.net account, and read some
Support pages that described the settings yahoo wanted TB to use.

It worked for me, and I am NOT a Rocket Scientis(sp?). ;-)

As it is their old bellsouth mail server mysteriously
appeared again day after I queried this echo on that one.
HOwever, once I"ve slowed down a bit I"m hoping Ole finds me contact info fo RW>that other outfit that ofers pop3 and smtp
services for a nominal fee, as I"d like to set up transex
for fido packets as well via email tunneling, to have
another method of fido contact between nodes, etc.

I'm glad you found the bellsouth mail server working for you.

If you think I might be able to help you with your at&t problem in any
    way, I will try.

Somewhere amoung my assorted papers is the print out I made from Yahoo
for the instructions they have of how to set up email exchanges in
Thunder BIrd or any other similiar email program.

If you want a copy I can go to sbcglobal.net and save the page of
instructions and get it to you.

    Richard,

What I was trying to convey to you was that the ATT/SBCGLOBAL/YAHOO
Settings that I set in my Windows Thunderbird program, would be the same Settings that you would use with DOS for setting up POP3 and SMTP
    services, I think. :-(

    Settings are Settings ain't they?

BTW I enjoy learning here in the various FIDO echos that I have joined,
and I try to share what limited knowledge I have learned to help those
who have helped me in the echos.

The only DOS_INTERNET experience that I have had is using Arachne on my DOS/Win3.1 486 computer, the one I am using to reply to you is a Athalon
    3800 XP box.

If you would want me to look at the Settings that I have set up in
Thunderbird for POP3 and SMTP I would be glad to share them with you.
