    Hi Kevin,

I just finished a round of trying a lot of boards and checking
them out. Now I've got a handful to work with. The reason I'm
saying that now, is that I'm not sure how it works to answer
from a different place than I posted. Probably no problem
    except the Fido delay.

I came by there about 50 years ago. lol We're not that far
    apart though.

    Roughly the same here.

Interesting. I don't understand the setup. Perhaps because I have
no MS-Windows knowledge. Would you care to explain a little?

The way I do it is load a driver for my card and then everything
talks directly to it. I run quite a few tcp/ip programs. Even
though I have a couple of much more powerful *.nix machines
at my fingertips, I like the directness of DOS - not to mention
that such small code runs faster than instant on a P133. <g>

Do you browse in DOS? I used to with Lynx but find it tiresome
and that's what the newer computers are for. I just finished
another blog entry about my new BBS adventure. It's at http://voxigo.wordpress.com and (I checked) it reads beautifully
    on a text browser.

    Cheers,
    Ole

    Sure...

The MS-DOS box has a 16bit NIC. Now you have to setup a Network Client for MS-DOS like Microsoft LAN Manager or Microsoft Client v3.11. on the MS-DOS box.

Once the Network client and NIC+drivers are set I talk to my router, all my box's are behind a Linksys router.

My server and notebook are on my LAN (local area network) too. So once you setup shared files and directories on /all/ box's you can (push @ pull) files and directories across the LAN.

The way I do it is load a driver for my card and then

    Ah... no router hu.

Do you browse in DOS? I used to with Lynx but find it

Nope, but my MS-DOS has access to the internet, via my router. So any MS-DOS browser should work. My MS-DOS FTP does, via the router. :)

Hello, I'm new here and would like to help keep this echo alive. I have been using DOS for many years now and it is my OS of choice for basic networking. I do ping, traceroute, htget, ftp, ssh, and telnet which I'm using now. Actually this is a new telnet client by Mike Brutman which I'm testing. So far it is the best I've found in DOS. I'll come back and talk some more if there is anybody here. :) Also, a new blog posting at http://voxigo.wordpress.com about BBSs.

However, I do hope there are more people here soon. I'll check tomorrow!

    I'm getting the idea. :)

The MS-DOS box has a 16bit NIC. Now you have to setup a Network Client for MS-DOS like Microsoft LAN Manager or Microsoft Client v3.11. on the MS-DOS box.

I've never seen either of those. I only tried 3.1 for a bit and then
left all MS-Win for good. So no networking from that world. I might
have a copy of 3.11 sitting somewhere though (I collect everything).
    How big are those clients?

I use FTP between all computers. I've gotten comfortable with it
and it's like mounting a FS to me now.

The way I do it is load a driver for my card and then
everything talks directly to it. I run quite a few tcp/ip
programs. Even though I have a couple of much more powerful

    Ah... no router hu.

I meant on my DOS setups. I run a lot of computers on a LAN.
Yes, of course. I have a WRT54GL (you probably know it) facing
the net and a switch to add some more holes. Unfortunately
with the (currently) 3 Linux, 1 Unix, 2 DOS boxes, and a printer,
all the holes are full and I sometimes have to unplug something.
My kid just came up with a 16 hole 10base which might be fine
for more dos and other functions. Probably I should just get
a bigger switch though. I don't like to spend money on
computers so it could be a while.

Do you browse in DOS? I used to with Lynx but find it

Nope, but my MS-DOS has access to the internet, via my router. So any MS-DOS
browser should work. My MS-DOS FTP does, via the router. :)

Unfortunately I think the only browser which works on the net
anymore is Lynx. Good pages always work in text. Even the forums
can be browsed in text, but it's a nightmare. I tried it.

FTP is great in DOS. I use my dosbox for all my text needs, and
I write a lot. Then when I want to publish it on the net or on
paper, I FTP it to a Linux machine. I use batch files to automate
the process. My little personal home page resides on my dosbox.
To make any changes, I just use a tiny text editor and save it.
Then I type "HOP" and the file is automatically replaced on
the Nethop server. Check it out if you want.
    http://nethop.net/~ole
Anyway, this simple batch file stuff is probably old hat to you.
I just enjoy it and like to advertise the fact that it can be done.
You know what I mean. :)

    Cheers,
    Ole
