• mTCP suite

From bob klahn@1:124/311 to OLE JUUL on Sun Jan 17 03:04:00 2010

The telnet client that I am using is called mTCP Telnet.
Mike Brutman just finished it and it is probably the best
one so far for DOS. That is what he set out to do, anyway.
:) Certainly the fastest by far - and he doesn't like bugs.
Go to http://www.brutman.com/mTCP and you will find a whole
suite of internet programs. They are:

    A DHCP client
    Netcat (like nc for UNIX)
    IRCjr
    FTP
    Ping
    Telnet

Thanks. I will look at them.

These are all written to work on an 8088 and up with low
ram. IOW old kit! I don't know why he doesn't advertize it
more because the FTP program, for example, is faster than
any others and not broken like the NCSA one. If there are
others here like me that like minimal DOS installations
then I hope you will take advantage of this excellent
    software.

That is more or less just what I was doing.

No, I'm no connection, I just want to promote a good thing.
    :)

    Completely understandable.

Although not that well. I am not familiar with 0.5.

    Ops.. it's 0.65 not 0.5. So I have both 0.7 and 0.65.

Will mTCP FTP work with a scrip file?

    Like so...

    c:
    CD \
    CD \ftp

    pkt2000.com 0x6f 0xa 0x300
    ftp -f net134.bat

    net134.bat:

    @open 64.59.128.134
    kevin.klement
    xxxx
    prompt
    lcd ..
    lcd \ftp\out
    cd NET
    binary
    mput *.*
    bye
    close

    etc...

Tried changing the stack.. no difference.

So I'm back to using FTP 0.7, as long as I del the file(s) on the server first, ULing works fine. I bet the other FTP programs would work too, it's mostly the same source code.

I'm using WATTCP FTP Version 0.70 by Erick Engelke and Dean Roth under MS-DOS 6.22. Works pretty good. Only thing is when I disconnect the FTP it disconnects my MS-DOS Network client with my Win server, then I have to re-connect everything, BIG TIME DRAG!

one of these days. LXFTP does that though.

LXFTP hu.. All I grabbed was mTCP FTP. I downloaded the mTCP archive from the URL you quoted. Were can I get LXFTP?

Also, I looked back at my (and other's) tests and the
problem was 0.70 had severe problems uploading both
    binary and ascii files.

    Ya UPloadiong chokes sometimes.

I actually have my dosbox set up so that LXFTP is used
in the several special purpose scripts. However, when
I type FTP on the command line then mTCP FTP is used.

Thats what I want to do, Automated UL/DL FTP under MS-DOS 6.22

Note too, that there is no problems running both WATTCP

    Does LXFTP use WATTCP too?

Version 0.7 is buggy. Most people use the earlier one. I can't see
the number right now, but I think it's 0.65. I have found the
LXFTP program is much better. The Englke versions should never have
been published. Try timing up and down and you will see what I
mean. LXFTP is the same code base, just fixed.

Anyway, Mike Brutman's programs are very solid. We've done some
timing and it beats everything else for speed. It's even fast
on a PCjr! You'll probably want to try his other utilities as
well. I'm using the telnet program now and it works as well as
the *nix versions I have on other machines. And yes, I'm in
pure DOS just talking to a NIC.

Let me know if you can't find any of that stuff and we'll figure
out a way for me to shoot you some programs.

There is a good thread comparing the different versions with
mTCP Telnet (the one I'm using now) on the Vintage Computer
Forum. A couple of us did some tests. Anyway it is obvious
that 0.7 is broken when you look at the up and down of both
ascii and binary. I can't rembe the details at the moment
though. If you want a link I'll find it. I'm very active on
    that forum.

So far, I've only had success with the original version I was using, FTP 0.6 I had to put in a /del/ file(s) command in the script because /none/ of the FTP apps would overwrite file(s) on the FTP server.

Hmm, sounds like there's a problem with your stack.
I've not had problems like that. I just type the
name of the exe and the programs work. Except, of course,
    the 0.65 and 0.7 uploads.

    Good luck!
