  • Dachshund Issue

    A couple of friends of mine (this lady and her significant other)
    have a "spoiled rotten dachshund" (par for the course <G>...he thinks
    I'm his uncle, and he's my nephew <G>).

    Anyway, the doxie is at least 11 years old, and they have a bit of
    a problem. While he will bark at the door of their apartment to go
    outside to do his business (he will do it on underpads in the shower
    of their apartment, if the weather is bad)...but the problem is for
    him to bark at the door when he's done to be let back in.

    He basically was trained for his "Momma" or "Dad" to be out there
    with him (he prefers exploring without a leash)...but when he's done,
    he just stands there, waiting for his "Momma" or "Dad" to let him in;
    thinking they're still outside...but sometimes, they've had to go back
    into the apartment, before "he's done".

    They and I are puzzled on how to solve this problem. Is there anything
    that can be done on this??

    Sure. Get another dog. ;)

    Nah, they've already decided when this one crosses the rainbow bridge, they're not getting another one. Both have numerous health issues (like
    me), and it's just too difficult to start with a fresh dog...especially
    a dachshund...as they are more stubborn than humans are.

    When I was a kid growing up, the lady across the street was a Dachshund breeder. She would keep the best of them to Show, and then sell the others. Anyways, that meant there were always a pile of Daschund puppies to play with, so it was a blast to go to her place. When I got a little older she would pay me to walk her dogs to give them exercise. That was fun too, those long-dogs like to go off on their own.

    That they do. They're also stubborn (hard to housebreak), but they're
    very loyal to their owners.

    A few months after we had brought the second dachshund home (we had to
    have the first one put down, due to failing health), we took him back to
    visit the breeder...and he had "a Viagra moment" <G>...basically wanting
    to be the dominant male. The look on his face was like "Daddy!! I have a problem!! Will you help me fix it??". I was so red, and it was like "Hell, No!!" <G>. When I told my wife and the breeder (who was 35 years older
    than me to the day!!) about it, they were roaring in laughter. <G>

    Both of them are dead and gone now, and I re-homed the second one the
    day my wife died.

    This couple I know have a spoiled dachshund, and when he hears my voice
    on the phone, he starts barking...as if to demand to know WHY I'm not
    over there!! <G>

    That's correct...because of their spinal column, and that they're low
    to the ground, as it were. Jumping on and off beds, furniture, etc., can
    cause them to get a slipped disc...and for humans who've had that, they
    know how painful that is.

    There are "dachshund ramps" and "dachshund steps" available, but I
    think the ramps are better.

    In playing "tug of war" with a friends dachshund, if he's on the couch
    next to me (it's amazing how strong the little booger is), and on the same level, he growls/grunts with each pull. His owners said "there's little
    chance of him hurting himself that way".

    Lately, he's eating better than his humans...things like apples,
    asparagus, bananas (his "Daddy" refers to him as a monkey), cheese,
    carrots, peaches, etc. His "Mommy" left a clump of 4 bananas on the
    table, and darn it, if the little weiner widget had the entire deal
    in his mouth, bringing them to bed. He wanted a midnight snack!!
