Jeff,
So how did this happen in such a conservative state? Quite simply, as
the
article explains, they completely circumvented the people. The people
of Iowa
had absolutely no say in this decision; that's how.
The people had no, or very little say, in Brown v. Board of Education, sufferage, or Loving v. Virginia (interracial marriage).
What is democratic about allowing a majority to decide how the entirety
of a society is allowed or not allowed to live? Personally, I am
straight, but I am not particularly threatened by homosexuals, nor do I feel it is my place to decide whether their behavior is appropriate, or moral. Leave me out of it and I couldn't care less. Did I mention that
I am a confirmed Catholic? ;-)
The Bible holds some great wisdom within its pages, but there is definitely a signal-to-noise ratio. If we use biblical passages to
argue that homosexuality is sinful, then do we also condemn men who
shave, men who are within 'X' feet of menstruating women, people who
wear clothing of mixed fibers, etc.? Do we stone our wives when they are out of line?
All good points.
Then again too, not any examples of same sex marriages in the bible. Any mention of same sex anything is mentioned negatively. Naturally followers of God and the bible will onject when it is brought up.
