    ...

I have a problem because most of those who protest nuclear power don't
have a clue about how it works. Then there's the people who are
using this Japanese problem to do their best to kill nuclear power
over here. It isn't about anything but political power, and keeping
their bootheels on the necks of the average joes.

Have you been checked for paranoia recently? Is everyone who
disagrees with you trying to keep his bootheel on your neck?

A lot of those protesting nuclear power also protest
    against ordinary coal-fired
power plants. IMO those people should be identified and
then have their power shut off.

Of course you will never conceede they just might be right. Coal
power I do believe should be phased out. Nuclear power needs new
technology, and to be much safer and cleaner. Fortunately new
technology is available. What does need to be done is to find
out how many of those bad designs are in use and replace them.

BTW, if nuclear power is so safe, why does the nuclear industry
get a limit on their liability?

While wind generators (supposedly) don't pollute one gets
    real tired of looking at
    them.

    ...

Looking at them doesn't bother me, but a lot of the people who
live next to them complain about their noise vibration and
    effects on light.

Note that years ago a LOT of wind generators were built in
the SF Bay area near the Altamont Pass (the old US-50 went
through it on the way from Oakland to
Stockton - and points east <g>). Environmentalists are
    forcing the power companies to
take them out - apparently a lot of birds were/are being
    killed by those generators.

A bit of googling shows they are not being shut down, but
replaced by newer and more efficent generators. The new ones
produce 10 times as much power as the old ones, with a much
smaller bird kill and count. The birds are not just crows and
pidgeons, but hawks and golden eagles. Most people would support
protecting them. The new generators do have lower bird kills.

One reason for the lower bird kills is that the new generators
sit several times above the height of the old ones. The raptors
    hunt low to the ground.

And they turn slower so they are less noisey and easier for
    birds to avoid.

Again, those protestors should be unplugged.

fanatics. I am and always have been a strict
constructionist when it comes to the Constitution. If the
answer to a problem can't be found directly, there is
plenty of contemporary literature to tell us what the
Founders intended for each and every clause in that
    document.

Since each and every clause in the constitution had to be
approved by each and every state, they are pretty much all
    compromises.

The writings of *ONE* founding father give his opinion only. No
matter how great his stature he still had one vote.

The true meaning is in the words. Original intent is far more a
    matter of opinion.

You want to have a discussion today? Fine, we'll be happy to accommodate
you, with one proviso. Do your research and learn how things work before
opening your mouth. I've been studying and following politics my entire
life. Spewing the latest DNC talking points won't fly in here.

No economics, no sociology, no educational matters, just
politics. All right wing at that.

Internet killed Fidonet for all intents and purposes, at
least here in the U.S. As for understanding U.S. politics,
which is what this echo was started for originally, living
in Sweden you may have a superficial understanding of it,
but until you've lived HERE for an extended period, you
don't have a real understanding deep in your gut like we do.

Yeah, deep in their guts, but not in their heads.

Finally, just because I've followed and studied politics
    all my life doesn't

But, somehow, never got past the right side of it.

Oh, but you are. At the end of the right wing.
And what tone do you take against Klahn, Sauer and Chirnside?

You're right, I am against them, but not for the reasons
    you are trying to push.

First, and foremost, they cannot and never could follow
rules of this echo. That is what got them banned in the
    first place.

This is a lie. The rules change to suit the whims of the right
wingers. At no time did I violate an actual rule of the Politics
echo to get banned. However, I did dare to call out the right
    wingers constantly.

Second, based on what they posted here over the years,
they've not had an original thought worth discussing. They
have never done anything but spew what the Democrat party
    puts out as talking points.

Another lie. You have seen more original analysis from me than
all of the remaining right wingers in Fido.

Third, when they can't hold their own in a discussion, they
turn to personal attacks. They make things up and try to

Notice how you turn to personal attacks as your first resort.

twist what others say to make them appear to be saying
something entirely differnt. Then they attack them for
that. Their politics aside, they are simply assholes, and
    nobody wants them around.

You are portraying the right wingers there.

And finally, I know Bob personally, so I think I am more
qualified than you are to determine where he's coming from.

What he says matters, not where he's coming from.

    puts out as talking points.

    ...

This was original, and you couldn't answer this:

    **************************************************************************
Things I believe the US Government should do.

    1: Bankruptcy

Repeal the bankruptcy law changes of the '90s that made it so
much harder to file bankruptcy. Go back to how it was before
than, then fine tune what may actually need fine tuning.

Eliminate all state laws giving property owners or creditors
exceptional rights above most states. IE: A multi-million dollay
mansion in Florida should not be exempt from seizuer in
    bankruptcy.

    2: Interstate contracts

Establish contract laws that eliminate states that are corporate
havens for abusive conduct. No more of Delaware or South Dakota
giving corporations a point from which to write contracts that
bind customers to rules that would never be tolerated in their
home states. Either contract by the laws of the state where you
do business, or write federal laws governing interstate
contracts, superceeding any such state laws.

    3: Unfair Foreign competition

Establish import duties equal to foreign export subsidies, even
those which are tax rebates on VATs. Strictly enforce laws
against the import of products produced by forced labor or child
    labor.

Tell the WTO to go to hell when they protest. Ok, give them a
reasonable explanation, once, then tell them to go to hell if
    they continue.

    4: Financial Regulation

Pass strict laws regulating interstate financial transactions,
or any transactions involving the Fed. Punish abuses by
financial institutions of any kind, including those not involved
in the stock markets or other federally regulated areas if their
dealings are interstate. Make the punishment criminal, and hold
those who sign off on the actions responsible and prosecute
    them.

Essentially repeal the repeal of financial regulations.

    5: Accountablilty and threats

Do not consider threat of loss of employment as a mitigating
factor of any degree in punishing those who sign off on the
    abuses.

For that matter, do not consider threat of loss of employment a
    mitigating factor in any crime.

    6: Standards

Firmly regulate the standards by which business operates. A
coffee maker should not be allowed to call a cup of coffee 6oz
to claim their product makes more cups of coffee. A cup is 8oz.

Require employers to adhere to time standards, and time zones,
and not set their time to whatever is convenient. Yes, I have
seen this. It may only be a minute or two off, but it can be
annoying when you are looking at three clocks with different
times. I'll be tolerant of those companies that are tolerant of
    other's on this.

Punish under criminal law any corporation that advertises or
sells by anything other than standard measures. A half gallon is
    64oz, not 48oz. etc.

There is no such thing as a 'face cord' for firewood. You can
sell it by the cord, or the rick, or by weight for all I care,
but not invented measures that deceive more than inform.

Require retail pricing to be at actual coinage measures.
Gasoline may sell at $2.999/gal, but they don't bill you .7cents
when the amount comes out that way. Let them round off the
volume, but give the price in real denominations.

    7: Vigilante groups

Tighten up drastically on the useage of military identifiers,
such as the word "militia". Any group that identifies itself as
a militia should be state approved, or find another name.
Militias have a long and honorable history, the name should not
be besmirched by nut cases running around a forest with guns.

    8: Election abuses

The Federal government should investigate the real election
abuses. State employees interrogating voters on any basis other
than their right to vote. And that only on a basis of probable
    cause or randomly distributed surveys.

Gerrymandering should be stopped as much as possible.

Elections where the results are clearly in dispute should be
investigated by the feds. The Florida 2000 vote should have been
investigated. In fact, it still should be. The Gucci Mob should
have been identified and prosecuted if found they violated any
    laws.

The republican abuses of absentee ballots, never denied, should
    be investigated.

    8a: Statue of limitations

The statue of limitations on election crimes, or crimes in
office by elected or politically appointed officials, should be
repealed, or extended to maybe 20 years after he finally leaves
    the office in question.

Yes, I chose 20 years so you can, if you can prove Clinton
committed a crime in office, send him to prison. OTOH, Bush will
probably get a free pass, cause I don't believe he was involved
in the crimes committed by his people, he was a puppet. OTOH,
Cheney and other Bush officials could be sent to prison, for
falsifying the intel that started a war, for blowing Valerie
    Plame's cover, for perjury, etc.
