• GOVERNMENT WASTE

From BOB KLAHN@1:123/140 to BOB ACKLEY on Sat Feb 19 18:49:08 2011

    ...

I don/t think one can refuse to accept US currency in this
country. But AFAIK you *can* offer a discount for other
    currencies to encourage their usage.

Just think, something costs 5 pesos or 15 USdollars.

Since the dollar is currently worth 12 pesos, you'd go broke in
    hours.

We know that the US government is broke and has been for
probably forty years. We also know that despite the
crushing existing debt and the outrageous deficit that
grows it that congress is not going to stop spending money.

The debt today is not even dangerous compared to what it has
been in the past. The only real danger is the lack of jobs.

In the not too distant future customers are going to stop
    buying US debt instruments
no matter what interest rate is offered, at which point the

Good, then China will collapse and the US can return to
manufacturing which will restore our economy.

OTOH, the collapse of the US economy is probably just what the
right is aiming for. The real right, the Grover Norquist right,
not you trivial right wing useful tools. The US economy
collapses, they wipe out your pension, military and social
security and whatever else, take away your military medical care
or insurance and medicare and medicaid, and leave you living in
    the streets with nothing.

The end result, the rich, IE the Grover Norquists of the
country, live like kings and you wind up a peon kissing his ring
    for a crust of bread.

    Enjoy your choice.

You did put that rather well.

It ain't going to be pretty, and unfortunately I'll probably live to BA>>see it.

we ar every close to what you describe. Keep an eye on US
Treasury Auctions. Notice who is holding the largest stake
in US Treasuries right now. It isn't the Chinese.

It's the FED. Probably a good thing. The Chinese own too much US
debt now. If they bought our products instead of our country
    we'd be in better shape.

    Fair Trade, not Free Trade.

    Agree absolutely with that last.

Also as regards to trade with China.

I once had a decent quality Presto pressure cooker.

    Current model made in China.

Given a good beating now and then it works after a fashion in retaining pressure due to its shoddy thin stamped aluminum lid design.

The old one was cast aluminum and always gave good service.

You can get as good as you can afford. If we had good jobs in
this country Americans could afford quality.

Yeah what got me out to vote last time was the promise of jobs
and doubling or tripling U.S. investments in R and D and renewable energy development.

To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

I'm afraid I've now adopted the philosophy of George Carlin as regards
    to voting after this last.

I have long said, I never voted for any presidential candidate,
but I have voted against a lot of them.

Right now Jobs are the only major problem.

actually I've been the same until Barack Obama.
    I voted *for* him.

I feel taken in once again :-(

    Largly agreed.

IMO we need to move much of our economic dependency from defense ( offense) related industries to civilian research and development for renewable energy and to find ways to once again put the U.S at the forefront of top quality durable goods manufacturing.
