    Excellent -- so, has anyone managed to get an analog modem to talk through a cell connection? I've lost several users who've dropped their hard-wired lines and then couldn't use a modem! And thanks to Microsoft, they don't know how to
    use Telnet (and it doesn't even come built into Windows 7!).

    <grumble> Don't get me started on that. But, it seems to
    be difficult to do anything about interconnecting a cell
    phone with other devices. A few hams I know who have quite
    liberal cell phone calling plans have wanted to offer phone
    patch services for the folks at sea, missionaries, both
    medical and otherwise, etc. on ham radio as has been a
    traditional part of our service offerings to those folks,
    but using their cell instead of their landline based
    connections.
    Queries I"ve seen re connecting a phone patch to a cell have come up pretty dry
    as well.

    Even acoustic coupling is sort of problematic with these
    things.

    If you have to try that, you're doing it wrong. My
    previous mobile phone was an inexpensive Nokia 6301b. When I plugged that into a Unix or Linux computer, it looked to the computer just like a USB modem. On several occasions I used "cu" to connect to a dial-up BBS or other remote host.

    Some networks (including mine at the time) bill circuit-
    switched data (CSD) calls as voice calls, but require data plans for packet-switched data services such as GPRS, EDGE and UMTS. I just took advantage of free night and weekend voice calls by placing my BBS calls at those times.

    I gather his cell doesn't do data at all, and therefore won't tether. Such is life!
