    Hi Bill,

I can understand that one.. you show your boxers, right? so the travel
is understood and so is having the tags.. It's better than taking a
chance. I'll have to ask my vet what he uses.. though so far since
we've moved to Ithaca, no one has needed surgery, but they're not
    boxers.

Just my male and he's semi-retired now. He gets to spend his days lounging around with his busy moments when he's playing stud... such a life.. lol.

haha that sounds like a perfect life for a dog <g>

It must be neat showing dogs :) My black lab is a full breed, my other

There are nice people in the show world but you know that movie "Best In Show"... the realism is scary!! People are neurotic over their dogs. It's expensive as well.. but hey, what the hell, it's only $$$.

Our black lab is a beautiful guy, perfectly shaped head, but being a runt he has quite the goofy appearance.. certainly not show quality but he's a sweetheat. There are times when the yellow lab mix pups get severely protective (growly and looking like they'd take a bite out of you) but Toby, our black lab acts like he couldn't care less, wouldn't know how to bite if he tried. He's a perfect dog for the grandboys who come over :)

two yellow labs are mixed breed and extremely dumb. It's the last time
I'll buy a rescue Lol... Nah, that's probably not true, but it can be
frustrating when you're used to a smart dog <grin>

    Rescue dogs are wonderful.

These two came from down south, and were rescued from a kill shelter by a couple who drive down there to save dogs like these. I wish I had the energy they have to do such things. When I called asking to see one of the pups they drove to our house in Windsor with the two of them, to let Toby meet the kids and it was a comical. I was only going to keep one, but couldn't deal with sending the other one back, they were both so beautiful.

I just wish first time dog owners knew what it
takes to own one. The person I got my bitch from was given to her as a
birthday gift by her b/f. Once they split, she didn't have time for it.

    Ah that's sad.

    When I
saw Savannah (her name) for the first time I fell in love with her. Three weeks later she was sitting in my living room. She's smart when she wants to be... typical woman... ;)

I guess the same is true of Sophie <grin>... she's really funny when it comes to "playing".. Indi, the male yellow-lab mix, spends his days chasing and tossing his ball all over the house (he plays by himself, really funny to watch
<g>), but Sophie acts like life is all business, like someone has to take protecting the family seriously.. Lol.. she never chases balls or plays with toys like Indi does, it's funny.

My boy thinks he's King... the bastard.. ;)

haha :) He probably is the King <g>

    Take care,
    Janis

As long as you have a good dog that loves you, who needs anything else. My two have a blast together and that's a good thing. :) Having a protective streak is not a bad thing. Savannah is my watchdog. She hears a leaf hit the ground funny she's all over it. No one can enter the yard where she won't let me know I have a visitor. Once your in the house, she's as quiet as a church mouse.

The females do that. They're the rulers of the roost. Duke is laid back.. but they both love playing with other dogs. Duke being he still has his nuggets is an alpha.. will try and dominate but is more interested in having fun. I just have to be careful with another alpha male.

Agreed.. Luckily dogs seem to move right in when put in a new situation and are
    happy to become "yours" :)

Hehe.. thinking back to our other black lab who died when she was 14 or 15 I have to agree.. She was female and she was the ruler of the roost - so I understand what you mean.. I just hadn't thought females being like that before
    I guess ...

they both love playing with other dogs. Duke being he still has his nuggets >is an alpha.. will try and dominate but is more interested in having fun. I >just have to be careful with another alpha male.

Hehe.. that's one thing that bothered me about the rescues... they forced us to
get Indi neutered, and Sophie spayed (not that I was looking to create more mixed breed pups <g>) - but I really didn't want to get Indi neutered. I understand where they're coming from though.. and it probably would have been a
bad scene here since Toby was never neutered. He had a bad reaction to vaccine drugs when he was a little pup and our vet told us back then to make sure he was watched for any problems after that, and to avoid any more vaccines for him
until he was much older. I didn't want to take any chances with any drugs that
he might have had to have with getting neutered, etc. Since we've always used fenced in areas of the yard leading right off the back door, we never had to worry about escaped dogs populating the neighborhood <g>

As for: Anyone ever run into this kind of thing with an older dog?

My MIL had two poodles (I called them Big Dog Bait) that got a special diet of boiled chicken and rice (veggies too, if she had them). She was the worst cook I've ever known (not Italian), but the dogs seemed to do well on that. As I recall, Ciello (the mother) went to the vet one day for teeth cleaning and never woke up from the anesthetic. Mz Fracaroli
was devastated by that and met me at the door of our house when I was
off to the shop. Seemed to me that the loss of a dog was worse than the loss of her husband. Dunno what Nancy did to help her get over her
grief, but all seemed well when I returned home. Don't remember what happened to the daughter of Ciello, but she wasn't much of a dog to
    begin with, IMO.

The vet probably used Acepromazine for anesthesia.... it's deadly for Boxers... and I'm sure it's quite harmful to other breeds as well.

Wow.. didn't know that there were some that would affect a breed (or
any dog) like that. That's scarey.

Yes. My vet knows my feelings about it and she'll never use it on either of my two but you must be dilligent when going out of state. When I travel they have tags they wear on their collars that state NO Acepromazone. Isoflourane is the preferred anesthesia for Boxers.
