• QWK?

From Aaron Thomas@1:229/426 to All on Thu Aug 20 21:10:54 2015
So, is anyone actually using Bluewave QWK reader these days? I see how it can come in handy, with all these Fidonet echos.

Are there any big issues with it at the moment? I'm willing to use it, probably for Fidonet only. Where can I get the current version?

Does anyone happen to know how well it works with Mystic BBSs?

yep, there's quite a few folks using it... you won't find them in the admin/arguing areas, though... they are mostly users of traditional BBSes...

the last version from the '90s before the author had a really bad accident is what's currently available... it requires a patch to handle a Y2K problem but other than that, it works well even though it cannot be registered without using a (hacked??) keygen...

Does anyone happen to know how well it works with Mystic BBSs?

i don't think that mystic does BW packets (yet?) but it does do QWK which bluewave can work with...

with all that said, if you don't want to dance the BW dance, there's always multimail which is still being developed and has binaries for several platforms
as well as being open source so you can compile it on your machine if you desire such... multimail does BW, QWK and several other formats of offline mail...

I was a big fan of BW back in the day (even had one of my messages in the sample message packet!) but nowadays I do a lot of BBSing using MultiMail, a QWK reader that feels a lot like BW. QWK has some limitations compared to BW format, but people are still developing it, whereas BW is abandonware.

Get the Multimail v0.50. It was compiled for Win32/Win64 by Robert Wolfe. That is the most current version but it was never released. It's available

My BBS has a QWK download funtion although it has not been well tested it
seems to work for me when I tried it a few times. It also has a QWKE option
so it supports longer subject lines than a regular QWK download.

    You misunderstand me. :)

I'm using the original Blue Wave door on my BBS. This is the program that creates the Blue Wave packets and also uploads them into the BBS' message base.

Multimail is the offline reader you use. I use Multimail 0.50 here myself under Linux.

I'm still using it, both as a BW reader and as a QWK reader... yes,
there still are some BW and BW-compatible doors in operation, too. :)

Are there any big issues with it at the moment? I'm willing to use it, probably for Fidonet only. Where can I get the current version?

It works fine, as long as you get either the repfix for it or the y2k
patch, both available... Mark Lewis has them available on his bbs...
The current version is still the 2.30 set of versions, and 2.2O also
still works fine. I use it for Fidonet and also for the smaller similar
    nets that I post in...

Does anyone happen to know how well it works with Mystic BBSs?

As a reader for QWK packets, it should work just fine... just like it
does for Wildcat BBSes and for Synchronet ones... No Bluewave doors
available for any of them.... but they generate QWK packets and process
    the rep reply packets...
