  • TZUTC kludge

    Hello All,

    I've noticed that my TZUTC kludge is off by 1 hour. It reads -0800, that is correct in PST but it is PDT now so it should read -0700.

    Reading in the docs about the TZ and TZUTC environment variables it is recommended to set both to get correct time in BBBS. Until now I have not set either and BBBS knows the correct TZUTC offset except in PDT.

    I am unsure how to set those variables and haven't come upon a working combo using trial and error.. :)

    Has anyone figured out the correct pair for your location and if so can you share? Maybe if I see a working pair of variables I can work out what I need here on the west coast in pacific daylight saving time.

    I have no TZ or TZUTC variables set now and if you look at my TZUTC it will read -0800 while it is actually -0700 now in daylight saving time.

    I may have stumbled onto the answer.. and I haven't even had a drink yet today.

    I now have my TZ variable set to PDT+7 and TZUTC set to -0700 and I think my TZUTC kludge now says -0700 as it should.

    I'm not sure if that is the correct way to do it but I think my TZUTC kludge is
    correct now.. :)

    It is, until this fall, when you will need to change it back to -0800 when you fall back to standard time. There is extended syntax for the TZ environment variable that allows you to specify when the time springs forward and falls back. This (if supported by BBBS) would in theory allow you to set it and forget it, because the software would have all information needed to decide if you were currently on standard time or daylight savings time.

    on my old system, i had to change TZUTC when daylight saving switched on/off...
    that software wasn't smart enough to set it on its own... today's software should be able to do so, though...
