QUADRANTID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is about to pass through a narrow stream of debris from shattered comet 2003 EH1, source of the annual Quadrantid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on Monday morning, Jan. 4th during the hours around 3 a.m. ET (0800 UT). The timing favors observers in North America who could see dozens of meteors per hour flowing from a radiant near the North Star. Visit http://spaceweather.com for more information.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM POSSIBLE ON JAN. 3-4: NOAA analysts say a CME is heading toward Earth and could deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field during the next 24 hours. The impact is expected to spark minor to moderate geomagnetic storms on Jan. 3rd and 4th. Aurora alerts are available from Spaceweathertext.com

POLAR GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Today, March 6th, Earth is entering a stream of solar wind, and the encounter has sparked a G1-class geomagnetic storm. Inside the stream, magnetic fields have a negative polarity--a condition which favors auroras. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for Northern Lights. Visit Spaceweather.com for more information and updates.

AVIATION RADIATION EXPERIMENT: This weekend, Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus are flying to Indonesia to observe the March 9th total
eclipse. En route, they are conducting an experiment in aviation radiation. Their flight skirts the Arctic Circle and crosses the equator, allowing them to
make cosmic ray measurements over a wide range of latitudes in a relatively short amount of time. Stay tuned to Spaceweather.com to learn the results.

WEEKEND GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A G1-class geomagnetic storm is underway on April 2nd as Earth enters a fast-moving stream of solar wind. The stream is filled with "negative polarity" magnetic fields. Such fields can easily link to Earth's own magnetic field, opening a crack in our planet's defenses against solar wind. This is why NOAA forecasters offer good odds of continued magnetic storming--a 60% chance on April 2nd followed by a 55% chance on April 3rd. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras this weekend. Visit Spaceweather.com for more information.

WEIRD CLOUDS OVER ANTARCTICA: This week in Antarctica, observers have been amazed by the sudden appearance of vivid color in the darkening winter sky. It is not, however, the aurora australis. Instead, icy clouds are forming in the normally-clear stratosphere above the frozen continent, producing an intense iridescence seldom seen at lower latitudes. Visit http://spaceweather.com for pictures of this phenomenon.

DOUBLE SPACE WEATHER BALLOON LAUNCH: On June 18th, Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus will launch a pair of space weather balloons,
simultaneously, 600 miles apart. The purpose of the experiment is to study the latitude dependence of cosmic rays penetrating Earth's atmosphere and to check models of radiation inside commercial airplanes. Launch updates will be posted at https://www.facebook.com/earthtoskycalculus

NEW MAPS OF THE SOUTH ATLANTIC ANOMALY: Scientists have long known that our planet's inner Van Allen Belt dips down toward Earth over South America, creating a zone of high radiation known as the South Atlantic Anomaly. A new study, just published in the AGU journal Space Weather Quarterly, reveals that the anomaly is moving and that it varies with seasons in a way that researchers
don't fully understand. Visit today's edition of Spaceweather.com for the full story.

CHANCE OF MAGNETIC STORMS: NOAA forecasters say that a minor coronal mass ejection (CME) could deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field late on Oct. 13th. Not long after, a high-speed stream of solar wind is expected to arrive. The combined effect of the CME plus the solar wind stream could spark G1-class polar geomagnetic storms on Oct. 13th and 14th. WEEKEND AURORA WATCH: High-latitude auroras are possible this weekend as Earth enters a high-speed stream of solar wind flowing from a hole in the sun's atmosphere. This is a broad stream, and its influence could persist for 2 or 3 days. Arctic observers are favored because only in the Arctic will the intensity of the auroras likely rival that of this weekend's full Moon. Visit Spaceweather.com for updates and more information.

METEORS FROM HALLEY'S COMET: Earth has entered a stream of debris from Halley's
Comet, source of the annual Orionid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak during the night of Oct. 20-21 with as many as 10-20 meteors per
hour. Glare from tonight's gibbous Moon will mute the display, but not completely eliminate it as NASA cameras are observing some Orionid fireballs bright enough to be seen in the moonlight. Visit Spaceweather.com for observing

STUDENT CHRISTMAS SPECIAL: Is there a young scientist in your life? For Christmas, give them the gift of exploration. For the holiday season only, we're reducing the cost of payload space on Earth to Sky Calculus balloons from
$500 to only $299.95. Buy an edge of space gift certificate before Dec. 25th and you can send an experiment, photo, or keepsake item to the stratosphere, completely supported by an Earth to Sky Calculus launch and recovery team.

[Too many 9s in that price]

A Skype brainstorming session is included with each certificate. Dr. Tony Phillips and other members of the Earth to Sky team will chat with students to help them craft an experiment that will work in the harsh environment of the stratosphere.

This is not only a great Christmas gift, but also a good kickstarter for science fair projects. Experiments will be flown and returned along with video footage, GPS tracking, temperature, pressure, altimetry and radiation data.

SUNSPOTS VANISH: So far this year, the sun has been blank more than 90% of the time. Only one very tiny sunspot observed for a few hours on Jan. 3rd interrupted a string of spotless days from New Year's through Jan. 11th. To find a similar sequence of blank suns, we have to go back to May of 2010, almost 7 years ago. What does this mean? Visit today's edition of Spaceweather.com for the full story.

SPACE WEATHER CONTINUES: No sunspots? No problem. Observers around the Arctic Circle are still observing magnificent auroras. A new apparition is possible on

SUNSPOT SURPRISE: Barely visible only 24 hours ago, a new sunspot group big enough to swallow Earth is bubbling up through the solar surface. So far the active region poses no threat for strong solar flares, but this could change if
its rapid growth continues. Visit today's edition of Spaceweather.com to view a
movie of sunspot genesis, and to learn how this development fits in with the recent "crash" of the sunspot cycle.

ARCTIC SPACE WEATHER BALLOON LAUNCH: This coming week, Spaceweather.com will be
flying to Sweden with a group of student researchers to launch a series of space weather balloons inside the Arctic Circle. Near-simultaneous launches in
the USA and Chile will allow us to probe the global response of our planet to rising levels of cosmic radiation in the inner solar system. Today's edition of

NEUTRONS ON A PLANE: Researchers have long known that air travelers are exposed
to cosmic rays on board commercial aircraft. Indeed, pilots are classified as "occupational radiation workers." Two days ago, Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus took a pair of bubble chambers onboard a flight from Sweden to the USA and detected a significant number of neutrons in the passenger compartment. This confirms that neutrons are an important form of
aviation radiation. Read more about it on today's edition of Spaceweather.com.

SOLAR WIND ADVISORY: A hole has opened in the sun's atmosphere and it is spewing a stream of solar wind toward Earth. The stream's arrival on March 23rd
could spark the first auroras of northern spring. Monitor the realtime aurora gallery for sightings.

SUNSPOT COUNTS HIT 7-YEAR LOW: The face of the sun has been blank (no sunspots)
for 13 consecutive days. The last time this happened was in April of 2010, near
the end of an historically deep Solar Minimum. The current stretch of blank suns heralds a new Solar Minimum expected to arrive in 2019-2020. What does this mean for space weather? Answers may be found on today's edition of Spaceweather.com.

VENUS AT INFERIOR CONJUNCTION: This week, Venus will pass almost directly between Earth and the sun--an event astronomers call "inferior solar conjunction." As it turns its night side to Earth, the planetary disk of Venus
is transforming into an exquisitely slender crescent easily seen through small telescopes or binoculars. Visit Spaceweather.com for photos and observing tips.
