    This is a little late because I have just returned to the echo after
    being BANNED by Roy Witt.

    The Subaru AWD does a very respectiful job because fo it's design. The Drawbacks are no low range transfer case and the car vehicle sits low so
    cannot handle deep snow.

    For the best gas miledge the old Suzuki Samuari, which was a very
    capable Off roader, is about the only option. It is a true 4 wheel drive
    and gets in the middle 20's MPG. And you do an engine swap and go with
    the VW Diesel it gets about 30 MPG

    Both the new Subaru Forester and Outback models have 9 inches of ground clearance. This is in the Jeep Grand Cherokee territory unless you get the really expensive Jeep with the air suspension that you can lift up to 11 inches. Also the Subarus have "X-Mode" now in the transmission so you can crawl. They are also one of the few SUVs that have approach and departure angles published... and there are commercially available lift kits to be had. Not bad for a little SUV. No wonder the Outback has become very popular in
    New England, Colorado and West Virginia.

    There are VW TDI kits available for the Jeep Wrangler too. The benefits are:
    1) You can probably find a Wrangler with a tired motor. 2) There are power to weight ratio benefits i.e., VW tdi has more torque but weighs about 100 lbs less than the Wrangler engine. 3) There are lots of parts available for
    modding Jeeps and 4) Fuel mileage is around 30 mpg vs 16.
