  • Looking for a new used 7-passenger car

    I drive a lot (50+ miles a day) and am looking for a car that can hold 4 adults and 2 kids (4 and 10 years old) comfortably -- occasionally, for short trips. My parents are getting older, and I'd like to be able to drive them and my wife/kids places.

    I could get a minivan or a full-sized SUV, but I don't want to pay a penalty in MPG every time I drive. I've been looking at a couple of options:

    The Volvo V70 (and CX70 wagons) have a jumpseat in the back. The Mercedes ML320 looks to have a 3rd seat option. One of my long-time favorite cars has been the Mercedes W123 300TD wagons - although they're getting a bit long in the tooth.

    Any suggestions?

    It really boils down to personal preference.

    Are these highway miles? Suburbans get at a solid 17mpg on highway. Durangos get slightly better, but are not as large.

    I have found that if you drive mostly highway, MPG shouldn't be as much of a factor. Here is what I average - MPG wise on my trips to work on the various vehicles we have.

    2002 Monte Carlo: 29.3mpg
    2001 Dodge Durango: 18mpg
    2012 Charger: 28.5mpg
    2012 Lexus ES-350: 27mpg
    2003 Harley - Dyna Wide Glide: 53mpg

    A lot of car manufacturers are touting the 7 passenger barrier. I believe consumer reports has a lot of nice things to say about the Mazda. The trick
    is to keep the beast under 30k and not have to feed it so much. I really like the Ford Explorer too since they have some good engine options you might consider. It has Land Rover looks too.
