Hello, what is this Lantronix of which some of you speak? Does it add Ether to vintage hardware? I personally don't think there is much of an "ethical" (haha) problem with a serial connection to a host PC, as isn't a computer ju a terminal for the Modem anyway, in a traditional dial-up setup? But yes, t Lantronix, if it is what I hope it is, sounds much better and really cool!

I'm using my Lantronix UDS1100 right now. Any old computer that uses RS232 will work. On the other end you plug it into your router. Then in whatever comms program you are using, instead of say:

    ATDT5551234

    you would type:

    ATDT124.43.55.190,23

The comms program thinks its talking to a modem and the Lantronix "translates" between telnet over ethernet and modem commands. It works great. The UDS1100 does NOT do DNS lookups but there is another model that does.

They show up on eBay now and again. Often they are expensive but I bided my time (used an eBay saved search with email alerts) and got one for $20.

The UDS10 has shown to be more compatible with a lot of the BBS people I've spoken to. Just a few quirky things with the 1100, but that could be configuration error or a bum unit.

The one that can do DNS lookups from modem emulation mode is the MSS100 (there are others too, but that's the one I use for the BBS and the Fidonet dial-out so I can verify that).

I haven't had any issues with my 1100. I'd buy another if I ever found one cheap enough. That being said I am on the lookout for an MSS100 too as DNS lookups are handy (of course).

    Hello Peter,

    > way, in a traditional dial-up setup?

I suppose that depends how it's used. During an
interactive login, yes, mostly. The way I used to do it was a little different
in that I'd connect, log in and then the BBS would send me (mostly using XModem
    or YModem) a
compressed QWK bundle containing new messages from echoes that it knew I was in. I would upload a compressed reply packet and then logout the BBS would disconnect me. The actual reading and replying would take place off-line. Can't do that with an ordinary terminal.

For STs without network ports, I have in the past
considered building a terminal server with on-board routing. It would have RS232 ports for SLIP connections to the STs and an Ethernet port for an upstream connection.
