From Ed Vance@1:2320/105.1 to BEN RITCHEY on Mon Oct 29 23:33:00 2012
    Ben,

I dumped McAfee Security Suite but kept their SiteAdvisor for Firefox.

I'm using Avast! free for anti-virus and all is OK so far.

I'm using the FortKnox Firewall and am learning how to train it.

Every hour FortKnox pops up a request for a Adobe Flash update.
I haven't allowed it, instead I go to Control Panel and check the
version of Flash and find out that I have the current version.

I don't see any setting I can change to stop Flash asking for a update
every hour at 42 minutes past each hour.
    Do you have any ideas?

Another thing I have been getting FortKnox pop ups about sometimes is
Netbios Name Service wanting me to grant it permission when FortKnox
says to Deny it, so I click on the No button.....17 times in a row for
the ip 169.254.255.255 port 137 UDP every time it asks for permission.

Then Netbios Name Service changes the ip to 192.168.1.255 port 137 UDP,
and FortKnox still says Deny so I click the No button 6 or 7 times until
    it quits bugging me.

I am still afraid something is in my XP box that even Avast! free hasn't
found, what do you think? Am I overly paraniod? Thanks!

    Same here {g}

Unless it autoadds a Scheduled Task or an obviously out of place service you can mod/delete, nada for me :(

Another thing I have been getting FortKnox pop ups about sometimes is

    Dunno about FortKnox, but it sounds very astute {chuckle}

I am still afraid something is in my XP box that even Avast! free

I did some testing awhile back using most of the leading AV products and each one seemed to find unique problems the others did not {shrug} so it's always a real possibility something is missed but finding out what it is is often a very
elusive task {chuckle} but sounds like you're on top of it. You might try GRC.com as he has some Netbios security info somewhere IIRC.

The easiest way for something to assert itself within Windows is to quietly install itself as a service, so you might also look thru running services when you're problems pop up. If they persist, Netmail me and I may be able to assist
further though my expertise with firewalls is limited ...

    Ben,

I will look to see if it is a Scheduled Task on this XP box.

FortKnox was suggested for me to use by someone at MalwareBytes,
so I thought I'd try it out.
It seems as good as ZoneAlarm was when I used ZA before McAfee
was offered to me for download.

I got GRC.com on my ROUNDTUIT list too! Thanks!

Since I started using Avast! AV it has done a checkout when this
    XP box boots up.

I also have added WinPatrol (Free Edition) to the XP box but
haven't taken the time to look at everything in its lists.

    Ben,

    I just used WinPatrol.
My XP Limited User Account didn't show any tasks scheduled, but
    when I clicked
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks

I saw Adobe Flash Player Update and Panda USBVaccine in the list.

I switched to the XP Admin account and saw the same two Tasks in
    the list.

When I used WinPatrol in the Admin account it showed me three
    others: Avast! Emergency Update,
    MP Scheduled Scan (Windows Defender),
HUB Task 0 (a bunch of hex codes).job

After viewing the info on Adobe Flash Player Update I decided the
next time FortKnox gives me a alert about it I will Check the box
to remember my setting and Click on the Yes button.
While I was preparing this message it appeared so I Did That.

That Hub Task Zero thing is for Sonic DVD Plus mediahub.exe file
    dated in 2005.
It isn't scheduled to run, but every time I quit using the Sonic
program I always get 3 pop-up windows that I have to click OK on
before I can see the Desktop.

Now I know why I'm seeing those 3 windows about a Error in
    MediaHub.
Maybe I ought to Disable or Remove it from the Scheduled Task
    list.

Another thing associated with Sonic is an InstallShield Program
Updater that appears whenever I use the Admin account and
sometimes I see it in the Limited User account, but it never has
given me any updates for Sonic DVD Plus.

    AH!, Computers Are Fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked at GRC.com for NetBios information and learned about
    MS's use of Ports 137-139 and 445.
    Interesting stuff!

Also used ShieldsUp! and the results were All Ports Are STEALTH.

    Ben,

The latest in the Adventures of Ed Vance and his computers is:

On Nov 15th everytime I started Firefox I got a pop up saying it
was something about a "Buying?" feature of SiteAdvisor, so I sent
a email to McAfee with a screenshot of the pop up.

I got a reply that they wanted me to either use their website to
chat with a Tech or call the Tech on the telephone.

I'm going to call them when I can get a ROUNDTUIT.

The pop up appeared each time I opened Firefox for several days
and then quit showing up a day or two ago.

But I've noticed that since the 15th whenever I do a search on
ask.com the result list have the WOT colored rating but not the
    SiteAdvisor rating.

I've found a work around by clicking on the SiteAdvisor area that
was colored Grey, and usually after doing that the colors in SA
start working until I minimize FF and open it up again and have
to go through the whole routine again....

This morning I clicked to the right of the SiteAdvisor area and
looked at the Options... and saw a Tab for "Safe Shopping
Rewards" so I UNchecked the box for "Show Safe Shopping Rewards"
and clicked on Save. Maybe that will cure the pop ups problem.
    ??

I Agree With You, "yes, they can be!"
