Because this XP MCE 2005 SP3 computer has been acting very slow I
ran one pass of MEMTEST-86 v4.0a yesterday on it.
is that memtest-86 or memtest-86+ ?? there is a huge difference... always use
the + version...

1. how many items do you have in the tray beside the clock?
2. it is possible that you have things preloading and consuming memory to mak
their startup appear faster... FF, Office, openoffice and many others have th
functionality... i always disable it and don't worry about the extra few ML>seconds it takes to load them when i want to use them... there's no need for ML>them to be preloaded and consuming memory and CPU if you are not using them..

I just looked at the Virutal Memory settings and noticed the recommended setting was 4509, but I guess 9165 is better, does that sound right to you?
Rule of thumb has always been twice the installed RAM AFAIK, but as long as BR>it's not too SMALL you should be good. Too big and you COULD get I/O bound wi
paging {shrug}
p.s. this is ANTI_VIRUS so throw in a word about that to stay on topic ;-)

I never heard of memtest-86+.
I downloaded it but haven't used it yet to check the RAM.

I will look at the 17 items above the Clock and also the 13
Quicklaunch items.

I have read comments on FIDO about McAfee's product not being as
highly rated as some other anti-virus products so I've thought about
using either Avast Free or AVG Free instead of the McAfee suite.

i think i made a mistake on the name... there's no '-' in it...
I downloaded it but haven't used it yet to check the RAM.
memtest86+ is done by another author when the original author of memtest86 ML>wasn't doing anything for a while and it needed to be updated... until the + ML>version came out, i used the original but ever since, it has always been the ML>version...
i also run it off of a bootable live linux CD... i use ubuntu here and it has
it on the live CD as a menu option... when the CD comes up, it offers a ML>language choice... i hit ESC there most of the time to keep the default and ML>then arrow down two or three times to run memtest86+ for several full rounds.
there are numerous tests per round...

yeah... quicklaunch stuff is ok... it is not running... it is simply a place ML>for shortcuts so you don't have to go rummaging thru th menus or cluttering u
your desktop with a bunch of icons... what are the 17 running by the clock? ML>those are the ones to look at...

I had to un-install Mcafee under Wins 7, it was unstable, system kept locking
up. Norton is too bloated for my liking, so I settled on MS Security Essentia
plus the Windows Firewall and all is quiet here. ;-)
