Because this XP MCE 2005 SP3 computer has been acting very slow I
ran one pass of MEMTEST-86 v4.0a yesterday on it.

is that memtest-86 or memtest-86+ ?? there is a huge difference... always use
    the + version...

    Mark,

    I never heard of memtest-86+.

I downloaded it but haven't used it yet to check the RAM.

    1. how many items do you have in the tray beside the clock?

    Mark,

17 items, and they are above the Clock because the Taskbar is on the
    Right Side.

    2. it is possible that you have things preloading and consuming memory to mak
their startup appear faster... FF, Office, openoffice and many others have th
functionality... i always disable it and don't worry about the extra few ML>seconds it takes to load them when i want to use them... there's no need for ML>them to be preloaded and consuming memory and CPU if you are not using them..

I will look at the 17 items above the Clock and also the 13 Quicklaunch
    items.

    Thanks!

    Ben,

Because of the slowness of my XP box I thought posting in the ANTI-Virus
echo would be the better place than the Windows95 echo where everything
    in general is talked about.

I will watch it a bit better before posting here.

    paging {shrug}

    Ben,

In the book the writer mentions the MS paging file defaults to 1.5 times
RAM IIRC and he was saying to use 3 times RAM, that's why I set it that
way. I have 3GB RAM so I used the Constant settings and set both entries
    to 9165.

p.s. this is ANTI_VIRUS so throw in a word about that to stay on topic ;-)

AT&T is my DSL provider and offers a free anti-virus Suite download to
    their subscribers to use.

In the past it has been CA, Norton and now it's McAfee.

I have read comments on FIDO about McAfee's product not being as highly
rated as some other anti-virus products so I've thought about using
either Avast Free or AVG Free instead of the McAfee suite.

I am not sure if Avast Free or AVG Free includes a firewall so I either
want to go back to Zonealarm or try the Comodo firewall.

Your reply to me about what I wrote wasn't on topic reminded me of when
I received a letter from the Federal Communications Commission called an "Advisory Notice" that their monitoring stations heard my signal on a
frequency I wasn't allowed to be on.

I had just built a Heathkit transmitter and didn't know it was
transmitting on a frequency multiplied by 2 times what I thought it was
    set on.

I had been wondering why no one had been answering my calls on Ham Radio
but the FCC sending a letter to me made me know I had to get the
transmitter I built sent in for repairs.

I'll try to do better "Mr. Moderator". ;-)
    Thanks.

Because this XP MCE 2005 SP3 computer has been acting very slow I ran
one pass of MEMTEST-86 v4.0a yesterday on it.

No problems were found in the RAM.

I have been reading a book called Windows XP Annoyances written by David
    A. Karp and have set both my paging file settings to 9165 which is 3
times the 3GB of DDR RAM I have in the box.

I just looked at the Virutal Memory settings and noticed the recommended setting was 4509, but I guess 9165 is better, does that sound right to
    you?

Sometimes when I Log on to my account I see a icon in the Taskbar that
looks like a rectangle with a line under it, and a small vertical line
in the center joining the rectangle to the underline.

I have clicked on it sometimes during the desktop start up and it will
vanish and a bit laterthe program "My Computer" opens up.

To me it looks like it might be some kind of Network icon?

I just looked at Windows Task Manager

    Mark,

I ran MEMTEST86+ for 4 hours today, 2 passes were completed and I
stopped it during the third pass.

My memory (RAM) didn't have any errors.

The reason I downloaded the MEMTEST-86 the other day was because I had
an older version I downloaded in 2007 so I thought to get an updated
copy before I run it on this vintage 2006 box.

Thanks for telling me about the + program the other fellow wrote, I
wouldn't had know about it since I never heard of anything other than MEMTEST-86. I have always liked good utility software, even back in the
1980's when I used the C=64 and a friend downloaded a program called
    UTLWDG from Compuserve.

i also run it off of a bootable live linux CD... i use ubuntu here and it has

I have seen the MEMTEST option when I live booted Ubuntu 7.04 but never
ran it, I only wanted to run it last/this month because of my paranoia
problem of wondering if my computer is being ran by outside forces.

McAfee scans have only reported PUPs about some of the software I
installed from reputable sources recommended by people I think are
    knowageable about this stuff.

McAfee still finds hp's KILLWIND.EXE and the next time it lets me tell
it that I believe it should be trusted I will click that button so it
won't bother me about that anymore.

Thanks for the help, at least I found out the RAM isn't the problem.

    Mark,

Two of the Quicklaunch icons I start up and leave on all the time after
the Desktop loads are Thunderbird and Firefox.

Above the Clock two of the items are in my Startup section -
    Mailwasher Free and Desktop Media.

    The others are for:

    Logitech Mouse (2)
    Adobe Photo Downloader (1)
    Digital Lifeline (2)
    Wordweb (2)
    Epson 3800 Printer (2)
    Netmeter (2)
    McAfee Security Center (2)
    Epson Event Monitor (2)
    NVIDIA Settings (1)

    Virtual Clone Drive (2)
    Local Area Connection (1)
    Volume (1)
    Safely Remove Hardware (1)
    Panda USB Vaccine (2)

Note: (1) Was on the XP box when I got it new. (2) I added these.

Digital Lifeline was a 3 year additional warranty I purchased.
I asked the store if they still sell that product and was told they used another compamy now, so I Removed the program since I wrote you.
    Now there are 16 items.

I don't use Adobe Photo Downloader so planning on keeping it from
    showing up above the Clock.

I'm going to run AUTORUNS soon to see what else it will show me.

    Thanks Ben,

I have heard good reports of MS's Security Essentials but because I used
a MS anti-virus program called Microsoft Safety Scanner MSERT.EXE some
time ago and it said it 'found' some questionable files and offered me a
change to keep them if I wanted to, so I told it not to do anything to
those files by selecting the button for that, but when I got to the next
screen it had 'PARTIALLY REMOVED' two files that were not in the list
they showed me on the previous screen.

That left a bad taste in my mouth for MS "Drive Scanner" programs.

Have you or any others who use MS SE had a experience like that?

I'd like to hear if MS SE is trustworthy. Thanks!
