    Charles,

I got a reply from Epson to my question about the ftp.epson.com entry I
    found in My Network Places.

    Here it is:

Thank you for contacting Epson regarding your EPSON Stylus NX430.

Not too sure why ftp.epson.com would be listed on your Network Places.
This is a link to our company server, and is not part of your printer's installation. This link only appears when a system is trying to access
our secure server. You should be able to remove the link from your
Network Places on your computer. For assistance on removing the link,
    please visit the Microsoft website.

We take your satisfaction seriously and hope that we have helped resolve
your issue. If you receive a survey from us, we would greatly appreciate
if you could take a few minutes to provide us with feedback about your
support experience. Your ratings and comments are extremely important to
    us.

If this did not resolve your issue, please reply to this email for
further assistance. If you have a different support issue, submit a
request via our U.S. or Canada Support Site and we will respond in a
    timely manner.

Thank you again for contacting Epson.

I looked a bit in XP Help & Support but couldn't find anything there so
I went ahead and deleted ftp.epson.com and it and all it sub-entries
    were removed.

When I was searching for answers about the ftp entry by looking in the
Users Guide for the NX430 I noticed the Guide was on their Server
instead of my hard drive, so I asked them about it.

I'd rather have my NX430 Users Guide on my computer just like the CX3810
Users Guide already is, so I can read it when I want without being on
    the internet to read it.

    Roger,

    That's right!

And about the Users Guide (UG), someone in the Win95 echo suggested I go
to Epson's site and download it, so I did.

I clicked on the Manual link, right-clicked on the UG, selected
Save Link As to put it on my system.

After Scanning the index.html file, I ran it and got a message saying it couldn't find the C:\<my directory>\Content file.

I looked inside the index.html file to see that all I got was just a
file to look at the UG on Their Server. DUH!

    Okay².

That figures. But I have to ask if it's possible the manual is on the CD the printer came with? No, you would have already looked there. I think their users guide is only available online, so I checked and found this:

    http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/nx430_/nx430_ug/index.html

which is no doubt what you found and probably the source of your frustration, even though it works. Screen capturing every one of those pages is going to take a lot of time, so you might ask them if they can make it available.

I looked inside the index.html file to see that all I got was just
a file to look at the UG on Their Server. DUH!

i wouldn't be screen grabbing... that's too much work... however, diligent snooping under the sheets shows that they are using a frames format for that help file... viewing the frame source for the left hand TOC frame turns up all manner of links that all seem to start with "source/"... playing, i've found that replacing "index.html" in your above link with the link in the page sources turns on the actual page content... but this is still a lot of work unless, perhaps, wget or a custom screen scraper can grab it all and format it for local viewing... but there's still going to be a lot of work...

FWIW: i note on the initial page that there is a reference to CHM which is one of the windoes help file formats... it would not surprise me at all to find that they are either breaking the info out of an existing CHM in the background
or they have already done so and are using HTML to present it... it is also possible that the site is working from the original sources of the CHM file... the question now is if the CHM file can be found or made available for those systems that are not conntected to the 'net... i think that is the specific question that needs to be put to epson ;)

    Roger,

I ran the User Guide program on the NX430 CD but I think all it did was
just a repeat of the original install, which put a Desktop Icon and a
entry in Start - All Programs to run a script to go to the internet
    address you mentioned below.

I had a reply the other day from Tom Walker in the WIN95 echo about
this, so I went to Epsons NX430 UG page and Saved the Index.HTML file
and then I Saved it again as Index2.HTML.

This time I noticed there was a Index Directory and a Index2 Directory
    made.

I ran the Index.HTML file with the results being the same as before -
it couldn't find some file it needed.

I told Tom I'll look at the files in the Index directory and see if I
could figure out what 'it' needed changing to make it work, that is IF I
COULD FIGURE IT OUT, and I'd get back to him what I'd found out.

DUH!, I forgot all about saying that yesterday and now it's late here
and I don't expect to get to doing it until after Monday.

I guess I'll have to write a(nother) ROUNDTUIT note and put it on the
keyboard so I can see it, to remind me to do that.

I'll post my reply here too, Roger.

    Tom,

The index.html file download made a directory named index_files ,
and the second download I called index2.html has a directory name of index2_files .

I mentioned in the Virus echo that I told you I was going to take a look
to see if I could do some editing of the files I saved, to see if I
could get the NX430 User Guide to show up on my computer instead of
having to go to Epsons web site to read it, but after printing out the index.html file and some of the .JS and .HTM files in the index_files directory, and looking at it some, I decided it wasn't within MY
    capabilities. 8(

A DIR /S on the index_files directory (for the NX430 user guide)
has 20 files, 11 directories and uses 249KB of space on the drive.

A DIR/S on the user guide directory for the Epson 3810 has 320 files,
71 directories and takes up 2,450KB of space on the drive.

    Big Difference, isn't it?
