Do you remember Xtree? I use a 32 bit version called Ztree.
    Ztree.com to find it.

Ztree has a batch builder function that can automate writing the
batch file to do the conversion.

If you like Dos you will like Ztree, and Xtree.

I used Q-DOS as my shell "training wheels" to transition
from the CP/M commandline to the DOS commandline (COPY had
so many more switches than PIP...and then there was the
option to XCOPY and more/different switches also<g>). Like

I started with the DOS command line, then went to Xtree.

your favorite text editor, the hotkey strokes eventually
flow like stream of consciousness and newcomers have to be
mighty impressive to preempt "old faithful". So I remember
tinkering with Xtree and being impressed, but not enough to
discard my Q-DOS mastery to switch over...and I was pretty
self-sufficient at the commandline by that time also.

Only Xtree is reincarneted for 32 bit as Ztree. Is Q-dos still
    around in any form?

    ...

archives in the file areas specifically, but even to this
day I still fire up Q-DOS from time to time when I need to study/prune/graft directory trees on the Netware 3.11
server from DOS, OS2, or XP without waiting for several
minutes for GUIs to build a map.<g>

I still use Xtree when I am doing some work from Dos, like
running Norton Ghost, or System commander.

    Any tips how to expand.exe a "set" of file{s) in MS-DOS 6.22?
I believe I used to copy them all to c:\dos and then use:

    expand *.*

    or something like:

    for %%i in (*.??_) do expand %%i

    Then del *.??_

if you have any files that end in a _ and the extension
isn't 3 characters, expand them too

That sounds about right. And I wish I had remembered that. I
just did some of that expansion last night, but I used Ztree,
and made a batch file with it's batch file function. It worked,
but your way would have been a lot simpler.

It's been a long time since I did that sort of thing. Probably
going to have to get back into it.

Ahhh.. expand.exe doesn't support wildcards, tried that already.

    for %%i in (*.??_) do expand %%i

It still asks for the name of the expanded file (boohoo) I want it FULLY automated. I'm too lazy to type the file name in.

    Then del *.??_

This should work to delete the compressed files, didn't try.

    Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22
    =====================

Packing List for 1.44 MB floppy disks
    -------------------------------------

This file lists the contents of each of the three Setup disks.

Many of the files on the three Setup disks are compressed. The left column lists the file name as it appears on the disk. The right column lists the
file name after it has been expanded. In some cases, the names are the same because some files are not compressed on the Setup disks. (For example this file, PACKING.LST, is not compressed).

Any file which is compressed needs to be expanded before it can be used.
All compressed files have a name in the left column which ends with the underscore ("_") character. To expand a file, you can use the EXPAND
utility. This utility is on Setup Disk #1 (in an uncompressed form so you
can use it), and is also copied by Setup to the MS-DOS directory on your
hard disk. (Note: To expand files before running Setup, you must first copy EXPAND.EXE from Setup Disk #1 to the DOS directory on your hard disk.)

For example, to expand the file MEM.EX_ from Setup Disk #1 in drive A,
to the DOS directory on drive C, follow these steps:

    - Make sure Setup Disk #1 is in drive A
    - Type the following command at the MS-DOS command prompt:
    EXPAND A:\MEM.EX_ C:\DOS\MEM.EXE

The MS-DOS documentation has more information about using the EXPAND utility.

I think the early versions were shareware/trialware...and recall eating LD charges to call the Gazelle Systems BBS in Utah to get it. By the time DOS 5 came out, due to the FAT changes, you had to upgrade from Q-DOS 2 to Q-DOS 3 which was strictly retail, but with a guarantee that they'd take it back and buy you the file manager of your choice if you didn't like it.<g>

I googled around for a bit and found a few hits on abandonware sites that either had dead links or required registration...so no easy link to paste.

The author ended up losing Gazelle Systems as a condition of his divorce settlement, and his ex kept it running for a while without producing any new versions or products. He started PowerQuest a few years later and produced Partition Magic.

Thats exactly what I did, in my OEM version there is a file called "packing.lst" that has all the compressed uncompressed file names, I edited that with "expand.exe" and made a batch out of it, then a batch file with "del.exe" to kill the compressed files. Worked great!

Hopefully this is an academic exercise, or are you still

I expanded everything weeks ago :)

Bought a OEM version from ebay for $40.00 too, it was easyer just copying the files from the floppies to the MS-DOS box.

Well let say you decompressing "mem.ex_" to "mem.exe"

It asks you, enter the name for "mem.ex_" so you have to enter of coarse "mem.exe"

    Hello Kevin!

    for %%i in (*.??_) do echo %%i

It decompresses the file in question, but then you have to enter the
    new file name.

    IE:

It decompresses "mem.ex_" but then you have to type in the new name
    "mem.exe"

You need a fancier command processor or batch util to split
fully qualified names into their component parts for this
exercise...and without a bootable version of the DOS
available yet, it isnt' the best time to identify and learn
    them.<g>

When I crossed this bridge in the day, I redirected "DIR
*.??_" to a text file and used QEdit to duplicate the
filename list, insert "EXPAND" at the beginning, and modify
the extension for the target filename to make a BAT. Older
and wiser now, there are slicker and sleeker ways to
generate a one-liner...but they'd still take longer to
    explain/nab utility/drop utility into a usable location
    than the low-tech manual hack.<g>

Hopefully this is an academic exercise, or are you still
trying to get your installation working?

Do you remember Xtree? I use a 32 bit version called Ztree.
    Ztree.com to find it.

Ztree has a batch builder function that can automate writing the
batch file to do the conversion.

If you like Dos you will like Ztree, and Xtree.

    Any tips how to expand.exe a "set" of file{s) in MS-DOS 6.22?
I believe I used to copy them all to c:\dos and then use:

    expand *.*

    or something like:

    for %%i in (*.??_) do expand %%i

    Then del *.??_

if you have any files that end in a _ and the extension isn't 3 characters, expand them too

Thats exactly what I did, in my OEM version there is a file called "packing.lst" that has all the compressed uncompressed file names, I edited that with "expand.exe" and made a batch out of it, then a batch file with "del.exe" to kill the compressed files. Worked great!

Been there and done that, too...but couldn't suggest it without a handy reference to verify if PACKING.LST was to be found in 6.22. In the process of searching, I discovered my current running install is still 6.20, and that I would have to remake the 6.22 floppies to check (which is probably also why I never bothered with 6.20->6.22 after a reinstall)...

Also, I don't recall if the install even transfers PACKING.LST to the DOS dir... Did it?

Hopefully this is an academic exercise, or are you still

I expanded everything weeks ago :)

Expected as much, but was starting to worry about you.<G>

Bought a OEM version from ebay for $40.00 too, it was easyer just
copying the files from the floppies to the MS-DOS box.

Interesting...I thought OEM-logo had reverted back to Microsoft-logo only again
by 6.22. It's really hard to remember as it was an interesting time in MS history. At the transition point between DOS and Windows, they did a lot of things like they'd never done it before (or since). Being at Dell and tinkering with additional pre-release versions, I also was exposed to quite a few more versions that never saw the light-of-day in release.

And then something happened in the 80's that seems to have affected my recall abilities for that specific decade...but I can't remember what.<g&w>

I used Q-DOS as my shell "training wheels" to transition from the CP/M commandline to the DOS commandline (COPY had so many more switches than PIP...and then there was the option to XCOPY and more/different switches also<g>). Like your favorite text editor, the hotkey strokes eventually flow like stream of consciousness and newcomers have to be mighty impressive to preempt "old faithful". So I remember tinkering with Xtree and being impressed, but not enough to discard my Q-DOS mastery to switch over...and I was pretty self-sufficient at the commandline by that time also.

The major advantage, that I recall being interested in myself, was being able to navigate inside the various archiver formats. Q-DOS didn't do that, as it predated most of the archivers.<g> Eventually SHEZ made it down the filebone and filled that niche nicely for maintaining archives in the file areas specifically, but even to this day I still fire up Q-DOS from time to time when
I need to study/prune/graft directory trees on the Netware 3.11 server from DOS, OS2, or XP without waiting for several minutes for GUIs to build a map.<g>
