I've been running allfix 6 (on xp) for some time now. No problems. In the middle of the day today, it started freezing. asetup works.
allfix announce works
allfix scan or allfix mgr starts to run and then simply freezes.
I've tried reindexing etc etc -- nothing seems to make any difference!!
I gave up on Allfix 6 after the same behavior. Allfix 5 has been
working consistently, and seems to do everything I need.
Interesting -- is there a path to down convert to 5 without losing everything?
I don't recall, think I had to enter everyting in by hand.

Well, I've just installed a brand new copy of 6, and re-entered everything by hand. (Did I mention I hate gui-based programs?)
Same problem. It ran fine until I started entering either nodes or echoes or links (dunno which)...then same symptoms again...nothing written to the log, even in debug mode.
I'd switch to an alternative even - anything to get the damn thing working!
doesn't it have an import function like 5 has? Utilities->Import Data... probably too late if you've already wiped out your install and don't have a backup of it... i've not used it but everything that you can export looks to be allowed for import as well as a few additional things...

Htick looks like it'd do the trick, but the documentation is sparse.

Htick looks like it'd do the trick, but the documentation is sparse. Synchronet has tickit, but it doesn't look quite as full-featured as I
need. It looks great for a leaf node, but doesn't seem to have
areafix, for example.
You might want to take a look at FileMgr but I have not worked on it
for almost ten years.
It does not do mail tossing though.
Just a File process and tossing tool.
That is so bizarre! My DOS Allfix 6.0.x setup recently started
crashing. I wonder if it's date related, or usage related or
something. I guess moving back to 5.x is an option.
Where could someone get this FileMgr people are speaking of?

Moving back -- well, I've spent 3-4 hours re-entering everything from scratch in 5.13 -- and it just says "nothing to do" <sigh>

At the risk of biting off more than I can chew, what exactly do you
need done?
Nothing now, thanks. I finally figured out that I hadn't entered any
nodes to send to, so of course there was nothing for it to do!! I
really hate gui interfaces ...give me a text config file anyday! :-)
I've got 5.13 working and I'm never upgrading it again! :-)

I'll need to look at it when I get home, but I thought there was some
file format issues going from 6 back to 5. 5 to 6 seemed to work.

As a follow on on previous msg, I looked at the file I was
recommending and noticed that somehow when creating it many years
ago I duplicated files, archives etc in the same archive.
Not exactly sure how but I have re-issued it as FM80316E.RAR. I will
be hatched around the fidonet sysops over the next few hours but is available here at 2:250/1 or via www.applewoodbbs.dtdns.net/files/ifdc/filemgr right now.

I noticed that -- the template files are missing, too!!

Nope they are there as templates.zip or similar but are there in the refresh.

There was a templates.zip, but it was empty. No matter, now I've got
5.13 running again.
Arr, just spotted a wee problem i.e., path for them so you will need
to extract
without path i.e., unzip -j templates.zip and this gives me :
Does depend on what archiver you are using though - another refresh
needed.
Being hatched as I type.

FWIW: this defect in zip and other archivers is known as "Zip-Slip"
and it is a directory traversal flaw that may allow a crafted archive
to overwrite system files with ones of the crafter's own making...
If you are using the echos for mail, the mail portion of V6 was never
functioning correctly to begin with in any of the realease (this wa
mentioned by Bob when I took it over, and also reviewing the code)
I have been completely re-writting the Mail tossing portions of this,
but have been concitration more on teh file tossing first.

I have placed a downgrade 6x to 5x program out on ALLFIX.COM. I've tested
it the best that I can as I do not have alot of the areas and items that others are currently using, I'm sure. Please try it and see if that works
for you.
I was also able to find the source for the Key Generator. I am working on getting it compiled so that I can issue keys until we get v7 off the
ground.
Please let me know if this works for you, or if there are any other
issues.
I will also work on a way to make some better exports of the
connfigurations as well.
Thanks
Ken

I know there are some major issues with v6 taht was compiled in
Turbo Pascal. I have most of the programs now compiling under
Freepascal for a DOS32 bit version, and windows versions (32 sand
64 bit)
I have some major issue that I am in the process of working out.
Also, with all of the new features and re-write we are going to
just release as Version 7.
Also, I am thinking on working on the Windows versions as a higher priority then the DOS as what I have been reading it seems that
more peiole are running on that more then DOS.. This will also make
it easier to work the bugs out.

Well, running the v6 version for OS/2 and having issues
with it. For some reason, it will not generate files.bbs
files nor update my Telegard/2 file databases, but it
does seem to toss the files into the appropriate
directories for the most part. Not sure what is going on
here.
Also, if you are using FreePascal, why not make an OS/2
version so that those of us still running our boards
under OS/2 can still use the application?
