I'm not sure how this should be handled. Windows file names are case-insensitive (unless you use the Posix API), but *nix file names are case-sensitive.
Preserving the case of the file name would mean that "file1" and "File1" are two different files to a *nix system, but are the same file to a Windows system.
At first blush I think that preserving the existing convention (always upshift) is the best way to keep things straight.
For linux and linux compatibility (on mixed configurations (like mine)), lowercase should be the default and prefered way!
