pleased to find the ABLED echo conference as I remember a former moderator named Willie Wilson. I had sat down with him many times, in fact, for a beer and had visited his apartment, where he explained the reason that he had no need to replace the burned-out light bulbs.

Glad you found Marc's dialup line.. that's cool. I lost my modem node recently

when my older computer system died this month.. hopefully I'll have Prism BBS's

phone modem back up at some point in the future..

There are some dial-up BBS's still around, but the amount is a small
fraction of what they once were.

Even though I myself have been fully disabled for 10 years now, and
run the only BBS left in Arkansas (that I know of), I unfortunately,
don't have dial-up access for 2 reasons.

1) When construction crews were working out here several years ago, they
sliced the underground cables like a knife through butter, even though
they were clearly marked. They left the holes uncovered overnight, and
it poured rain, ruining the cables. The resulting line noise made it practically impossible to get a decent voice call...never mind a data
call.

2) The cost of a "vanilla" phone line, when I'm on a fixed income, and
have many other bills to deal with.

I don't recall Willie Wilson in here, but it has been quite awhile
since I've seen a post in this echo.

If cost and noisy phone lines weren't an issue, I'd consider having
dial-up access on the BBS. But, it's not feasible for me to do so right
now.

Prism -- I would like to hear about that. I found a list of dial-up BBSs at a Web site named The BBS Corner. I have been trying them one-by-one. Prism,Windsor, NY, was on their list last year but not this year. Wishing you luck in getting it going again. I too will be checking the Abled Echo again.

I understand what you are saying about the "vanilla" phone line. Happily,phone service here in the Pittsburgh area is still good. About Willie Wilson,I believer he was the founder of the Abled Echo, some time around 1984.

I had to look at the other Marc's signature for a minute and wonder
where the monkey went. Bad thing about having a brain injury is I
literally feel like that crazy start up noise in Windows 95 when I first
wake up.

Whirrrr....rrrr..rrr ding ding ding then maybe all the other programs
will load while the rest of the system slows to a crawl.

Not sure if it was the computer or the monitor... (sorry it took me so
long to reply my .qwk door isn't cooperating).

It was an old pentium system that ran the BBS. I had another newserver
set up on a mac mini (lost it too). Days before it went up the hard
drive started to make death threat noises and i was going to upgrade the system. It went up whiles I was at work... thankfully my neighbor saved
my cats.

At the time I was working crazy double shifts at the Jail... and I just
didn't have the time, energy or drive to put it back together.

Now I am disabled so I literally have all the time in the world to set
things back up. Problem is I'm limited as to how much quality computer
time I get. It triggers nausea, vertigo and headaches.
