It's definitely entry level, but the price sure is right.

Beat ya to it Mark. After researching and searching my ass off most all
day and night yesterday along about one or so yesterday I got my usual TigerDirect e-mail *specials* e-mail and that was first thing that
popped up. I read the specifications, but Flo nor Kayla weren't home so
I took a leap of faith, or possibly fate and bought one for her. It was
shipped yesterday afternoon about as soon as my shopping cart emptied.
Seems like they were just grateful someone was *idiot* enough to do the shopping and decision making as to what kind of computer to buy for
them. Their happy. I've already got my money for the order and gained
the little Dell 5000e with Win 2000 as little bonus for my efforts. I'm
happy. Everybody else is happy. All I got to do is hassle with em about
the rabate as soon as the box arrives. I learned hell a lot about what
is out there in the way of non-os laptops that I didn't know prior also.
Seems several companies, namely MSI sell what is called a whitebox
barebones laptop sans processor, HD, etc. that you can pretty well do
like building a barebones desktop or mini. They are pretty high end and seemingly geared for gamers and such though and have a pretty hefty
price tag ($500) and on up) on them. I learned seemingly Dell will now
only sell refurbished units sans OS, and same with a couple of other
    companies.

Good experience although kind of grueling and frustrating for a
    wishy-washy like me. ;-)

Back to mundane and menial here. Out way before dawn this morning for
air, exercise and shopping. Just woke up from a catch up nap. Coffee's
good. Got a good supply of NA Life I can tear into. Good day to stay in
out of the heat and engage in indoor NA, instead of out and about NA.
Got couple of boxes of shit in closet to play good potato/bad potato
with, for dumpster or Goodwill. ;-)

Good enough. Gotta be better than what she was using, and should be good enough to do what needs to be done.

Load of 'nix for Internet stuff should keep the infection rate to a minimum.

And FWIW, while you know how I am about payware, I've taken to upgrading Malwarebytes to the Pro version for my most infection prone users. It's
a one time $25 charge. Gives you resident protection, automatic updates,
and scheduled scans. Seems to be the best prevention against the rogue anti-malware trojans that are all the rage, and which seem to get by the normal anti-virus apps fairly regularly. Plays nice with Microsoft
    Security Essentials.

Yo Mark, I've been promoting Mbam pro for ages. Saved my bacon a few times too. That and Rkill

Heres an idea of prices over here - this is bare bones http://www.maxburns.ie/?ECProduct=3192

This one is running Mint, and a spare copy of Win 7 I have from the office. Ram prices are ridiculously low these days, an extra gig is 22 euro and a second HD was 45 -
Lenovo and MSI 'appear' to be taking a firm foothold - Lenovo is China
based - MSI Taiwan - but you gets what you pay for
After over 10 years dealing with Dell, I got a bad deal and blew them out.
No english speaking support, and a very expensive set of fone calls later, I returned a set to them and cancelled the CC. Threatened me with solicitors letters, but I stuck fast and they eventually relented and offered me vouchers. I told them to send an Irish representative who was either Irish
or English to our offices and I'd parlay with them. Never happened.
Friggin support is in Indonesia would you believe

I shop local now, where they deliver what you ask for rather than sales-push :-)

    Cheers
    Tommy

I've been using MBAM (and rkill as needed) for ages, but have only
recently come around to installing the payware version. The usual
anti-virus applications, be they freeware or payware, just don't do a
good job of preventing infection from the rogue anti-virus trojans that
are now so prevalent. MSE seems to minimize the damage; the infections
I've seen on machines running MSE can be best described as
"superficial". Norton, McAfee, etc. are worse, and even Avira and AVG
don't prevent them like they should. So far, I've not seen a
re-infection on a machine running the Pro version of MBAM.

Laptops being as locked down as they are hardware-wise, it's darn near impossible to buy one sans OS unless you are willing to go refurb or pay
    a hefty premium.

    sales-push :-)

We haven't "bought" a machine at my workplace in five years or so, ever
since I started building. It's a no-brainer -- you can build for the
same money as you can buy and get far, far better components. It's the
cost of the OS that screws us little guys, but I'm able to work around
that -- in many cases, by moving the user to Linux.
