• TPCser vs BBS Server

What are your preferences on these two modem emulators? I use TCPser when using CCGMS and calling out to boards, but then again I use BBS Server to answer the calls for my C128 BBS. What do you use and why?

I prefer BBS Server for my BBS' because it is a bit more stable and you know what is going on with it. BUT since converting 2 of my boards over to the new CMD/RamLink/HD setup of Vice I use TCPSER, it works fine but Vice lately has not been very stable.

I *would* prefer to stick with BBS Server but I am experiencing a weird problem
with it. Whenever I connect to my test BBS, it will spit out garbage characters. Somethings it will send normal text. I only have it set for 1200 baud since that's the maximum that the BBS will handle. My setup is very basic.
Just an omnitronix RS232 connected via null modem adapter to a Mac mini running Win7.

The same setup works fine when I use a SwiftLink interfac connected at 38.4k. I
do not want to run a SL compatible BBS however.

Hmmm then make sure you have BBS Server set for 1200baud.. Sounds like it is
    at the wrong baud rate...

    Check that out...

    Hey dude,
I only use TCPSER, because im running it on an Raspberry PI instead of a Windows box. Another reason is because i want to be able to modify the code
to for example add "Bot Protection".

Im just a fan of Linux/Unix and Open Source. But dont get me wrong, i realy enjoy BBS Server too, its a great software.

Yep, it is set to the correct baud rate.

Something else worthy to note, when I enable to ASCII translation, this text is
    sent out in the clear.

In addition, I can dial out (even at 2400bps) just fine.

If you ask me, I would say it is something in the negociation that isn't quite right but I haven't a clue. I have even tried two different 1200 baud BBSes but
    they behave the same.

I can also manually connect to the host from a client computer and it workss fine!

That's weird, but I agree with you it's got to me in the negotiation of the baud rate. One side might be a high speed setup and the other might be 1200.. It shouldn't matter with TCPSER, but with BBS Server it will.. Check the BBS server log for any error messages. That might lead you down the path to
    fixing it..

Hey, have you tried playing with the "-i" switch to specify the AT-command
INIT string? Additional to this you need to specify both the speed in the
RS232 connection, and the modem with "-s" and -S".

You can also try with the "-I" for inverting the DCD pins.

THis is what i use for my AtariBBS
    cmd: tcpser -d /dev/ttyUSB0 -p 1040 -U -i "&k0" -l6 -s 19200 -S 19200

    Hope this helps.

Now I am currently using both. BBS Server for my C64 BBS and TPCser for my C128 BBS. They both have their good points and both seem to be working.

I may have to reconsider TCPser. I believe this is what I will need to use as the bridge in VICE to get it on the internet.

If I can succeed at using plain ole user port or SwiftLink emulation in VICE to
make outgoing connections, I would be eble to test my BBS under emaulation instead.

Is there an online setup guide for TCPser?

    Thanks.

I currently run a CNet 128 board, and a Image 3.0 board with TCPSer, they both run fine, just make sure you set the ports correctly in Vice and TCPSER, I believe Vice is already set for 25232, just make sure you checkmark IP232 on the serial you choose. If you need help let me know and I can make pics available of my settings.. I have also written scripts for Ubuntu to automatically boot TCPSER and both BBS'. Makes life just a bit easier..

    Thanks for the info.

I would love to see your VICE settings. I am using VICE 3.5 now, by the way. I read that you no longer need to be forced to use an older version of VICE to make this work.

Hmmm....so, can you "attach" .jpgs to email here? If not, I can PM you an alternate email address.

I would send them via email or Facebook, if you are on Facebook send me a message at Al DeRosa OR email me at wrgnbr2@gmail.com and I will send you my config files, they are pretty much basic as I prefer the KISS method for
using this stuff.. To many people start screwing around with changes that aren't needed like TCPSER, there is no need for the extra hayes commands in
the startup line. I just set the port, the ip setting for Vice I invert carrier, and set the logging to 4 so it looks like tcpser -v25232 -p6400 -I
-l4 and that is it! Vice is pretty much the same, I keep the settings to a
bare minimum although I run a few different setups, 1 has Lt Kernal setup, 1 CMD HD setup, and 1 with CMD HD, RamLink, and SCPU.. It's all kept to the
bare minimum in changes. Email me your email and I will send you my config files..
